· Hi Class,

In Week 5, you will have a paper in which you will summarize a research article.  Although our class is just starting, selecting an appropriate article will take time.  One of the things that many students have difficulty with is choosing an appropriate article (I did also when I was new to a research course).  So, what is a research article?

A research article is one that is found most often in a peer-reviewed journal.  The article reports the results from original research and demonstrates how the research added to the knowledge in a specific area.  Research articles can be found in almost every area of knowledge.  For this class, it may be best to focus on psychological research.  Research in other domains, such as medicine or science, may be too complex for people who are not in those specific fields to understand.

Research articles usually have, as the instructions for this assignment note a title and abstract, an introduction which includes the purpose of the study, the methodology used for the research, the sample used, the results obtained, and a discussion of the findings, which includes how the results obtained may affect future research.

The title usually gives the reader an idea of the area of study.  An abstract is generally a brief summary of the research study.  If you review the abstract, you should have an idea whether the article is suitable.  Reading the abstract can help you decide whether to move forward with the article or find another.

The introduction will state the focus of the study and the reason for the study.  This section usually includes a review of the literature on the topic. (Week 2) This will help the researcher demonstrate how their research will add to the current knowledge on a specific topic.

The methodology section will discuss the methods used while conducting the study.  In addition to helping the reviewer to see that appropriate research methods were used, this provides information that allows for replication of the study.  This can help future researchers see whether they obtain the same results if replicating the study.  The article also specifies the sample used (Week 2).  Choice of sampling methods is also a vital aspect of research.

The next area discussed is the results section.  Do not worry if you do not understand the statistical tests and values at this point - you will after studying statistics in a later class.  This section simply reports the results from an analysis of the data and applies to both quantitative (statistical) research and qualitative (non-statistical) research.

The final section of the paper is the discussion.  In this section, the researcher(s) presents their interpretation of the results, summarizes the findings, discuss how the results relate to existing research, and how the results may affect future research. The researcher may also discuss any unusual or unexpected results here.

The only place you need to search is in the university library.  Although some research articles can be found on sites such as the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), these same articles are usually found in the library and are easier to access.  If you need any assistance, please let me know via private message.  Thanks.
