The organization that I plan to Use for Process Improvement

The name of the organization that I plan to use for process improvement is Starbucks. Starbucks is one of the world’s leading coffee franchise firms (Starbucks Corporation, 2014). Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, the firm is lauded as the world’s largest coffeehouse and coffee retail chain, having more than 11000 stores in the United States and over 20000 stores internationally. These stores are scattered in 65 countries across the world. Starbucks was founded in 1971, and has since undergone tremendous expansions and growth (Starbucks Corporation, 2014). Currently, the organization is headed by Howard Schultz, who has served as the CEO for over two decades. Since Schiltz’s appointment as CEO, an average of two Starbucks franchises have been opened on a daily basis across the world. The organization has made its policy clear that it plans to expand its brand and social influence into the levels of pop culture and to rival McDonald’s when it comes to global outreach and economic power (Starbucks Corporation, 2014).

Why I plan to develop process improvement plan for this firm

I am interested in developing a process improvement plan for this organization since one of its goals is to be the leading in its industry in terms of global outreach and economic power. In this respect, I believe that one of the ways in which an organization can be elevated to this status is by improving its business process (Starbucks Corporation, 2014). Expansion alone does not elevate it to a global economic power without improving its business process.

Examples of Known deficient processes

In its bid to become the world’s leading coffeehouse, Starbucks has undergone various challenges. First, the organization has an inefficient hiring and recruitment process. It recruits approximately one hundred and fifty employees on a single day (Schepp, 2012). This task is overwhelming, considering that it uses manual pen-and paper system for recruitment. In addition, the process of ordering and serving clients takes roughly thirty minutes on a normal day (Starbucks Corporation SWOT Analysis, 2015). This needs to be reduced to five minutes, since the company serves thousands of clients. Furthermore, the organization has witnessed increasing cases of product recalls, which threatens to injure its international reputation. This happened regularly in Singapore, especially when it comes to its ceramic mugs (Starbucks Corporation SWOT Analysis, 2015). For that reason, the organization needs to improve its quality checking process before dispatching products for sale. Finally, it needs to improve its delivery process, since the delivery of a given good may take approximately three business days.
