This assessment is an Oral Presentation which you will deliver individually.

Task:

You will work individually to prepare a 5-10 minute presentation on a topic related to one of the themes covered in the module: An Electronic World, New Frontiers or The Individual and Society. This theme, and your presentation title, will also be the topic of your end-of-term Individual Essay assignment, so make sure you find it interesting and can find enough relevant sources.

· Restricting air travel is the most effective method of reducing air pollution. To what extent do you agree?

First, decide which theme you wish to work on, and then choose one of these titles. You should draw on research related to your topic and you will need to incorporate visuals in the form of a PowerPoint / Google Slides.

What you will be assessed on:

· The way you deliver your presentation (use of language, presenting techniques etc.).

· The content and structure of the presentation (logical argument + organisation of ideas).

· How well you develop your thesis and support it using relevant data and examples.

· The sources you use to provide evidence and how well you acknowledge these sources.

· How well you deal with questions from the audience.

Further Guidelines:

You must send a copy of your Powerpoint/Google Slide to your tutor by the deadline set- before the first summative session.

You must attend each summative presentation.

· Presentations must be between 5-10 minutes. Up to 3 minutes of this time will be allowed for answering questions at the end.

· The PowerPoint/Google Slide should show your I.D. number and not your name.

· You can use the Study Skills 3 book for information but must also include 3 other academic sources you have found.

· All sources should be acknowledged in full on the final slide of your PowerPoint.

You might add 2 more slides beneath slide (10 refutation) you could add point of view and then other slide opposite point of view then the summary and conclusion and references

This is a 1250 to 1750 word referenced essay writing task that requires you to demonstrate your ability to develop a line of argument on a topic related to your field/interest on one of the broad themes covered in the Unit 3 module. The title must be the same as the one previously researched for the presentation, but can differ slightly in thesis and focus if suggested by your tutor.

In your essay, you can refer to sources from the Skills for Study 3 book, but you MUST also refer to at least 3 other sources which you have found. You must ensure that the sources you use are academic and reliable; in particular ensure that Internet sources are accessed via a reputable academic database or an academic journal.

What you will be assessed on:

1. Establishing a clear purpose or thesis statement of your essay

2. Developing a line of argument, expanding and supporting the arguments with reasons and relevant examples

3. Identifying and evaluating counter arguments, opinions or solutions

4. Writing in an evaluative rather than descriptive manner

5. The extent and depth of your research of independently found sources

6. Incorporating others’ work effectively by quoting, summarizing and paraphrasing viewpoints and using in-text citations accurately

7. Compiling a complete, accurate, consistently referenced bibliography (standard Harvard system) at the end of your essay.

8. The clarity of expression used in your writing, especially register and style.

Your score can be capped at 95% if :

Your draft essay is not submitted by the deadline - only 95% of the final essay mark will be awarded
