Communication and how it has affected my self-perception

• First, I will introduce my topic to the audience.

1. I'm pretty sure all of us in this room had a dream as kids. Some of us are still pursuing them until this day, others have slowly faded away from their dreams into something that is perhaps more realistic or more appropriate to the desire of their parents'.

2. We all know the feeling of being a freshman, whether it was college or high school. Soccer back home is more than just a sport. Coming into the soccer team as one of the very few freshman was nerve racking enough, however due to my father being a soccer coach in a local college, his persistence and constant support lead to a great amount of self confidence and then to be the only freshman to start with all the other seniors and juniors. The seniors would not give me the respect that I deserved and always treated me like I was just a waste of space. That was mainly because I was a freshman and I had taken the spot of a couple of the other seniors. Well, at least that's what my dad had told me. My dad always told me to learn from those that were older than me on the team, but they weren't good teachers whatsoever. They portrayed the wrong image, why is it that the freshman has to be bullied? Instead of being taught what I was unable of doing at that age.

3. That's when I had promised myself and the senior me, to teach the younger and do all I can to support them and mainly set an example.

• First, I’ll tell you the story of what happened.

• Then, I’ll apply the concept of face needs to my experience.

• Finally, I’ll tell you what I learned from my reflection on this experience. [preview, points i-iii]

• I will tell my story, explain my analysis, and tell the audience what I’ve learned.

1. • My Junior year, my father had passed away from a sudden heart attack and playing soccer after that was just too much to handle after he was the main reason I had gotten into soccer. As time went by, I started looking at the death as more of a motivation for me to pursue and set an even better example for those who are younger. After missing out on the soccer season as a Junior, I joined a soccer camp in the country for a month and rejoined my previous club to get back in shape and ready for the soccer season my senior year. Within months of constant training the coach of the soccer team had realized my efforts and assigned me as the team captain when he noticed my ability to communicate with the younger members of the team and point out what they were doing wrong at training in order for them to get better.

   • This is where face needs come into play with my story. In Floyd's(2011) book Communication Matters, face needs are described as a certain way we want others to see you and think of us. Growing up I wasn't much of the talkative guy on the field, but I knew if I had wanted to set an example to the younger ones and not be one of the captains I've had to grow up playing with that yell and cuss at you making you beg not to receive the ball at a game.

• • • Now that I’ve told my story I will explain what I’ve learned from this experience.

1. • Now I realized how valuable communication is, whether it was between me and my father or on the field with my teammates. His words to me made me the person I am today and made me need to be a teacher instead of just a player. Praising the younger ones at games definitely brought a smile to their faces, and telling them what they were doing wrong on the training field in a helpful method instead of just criticizing also backs up how valuable communication was in order to develop the helpful person I am today and the impact I had on those kids that have turned into remarkable soccer players.

• I will conclude my speech by summarizing my main points

• • My communication with my dad and the effect it had on me wanting to teach the sport and not just play it. In addition to hopefully pursue in soccer and play at a higher level mainly because of the confident man his words made me become and the fact that he had me convey such high soccer concepts.

  • As much as it mattered to me for us to win games, I cared most about the younger ones walking away from the game with something to learn. Being the captain sure gave me leadership roles that I had to live up to by talking to the players and making sure they know what they did wrong and how they can build on that and minimize such mistakes from happening in the future and hopefully set an example for them.
