Due: March 3 [THURSDAY] @ 11:59 pm, Week 8
Assignment Instructions:
Description:
Scenario:
You are interested in finding either an internship or a job in your field. You start by finding a job posting or advertisement from an online job site, newspaper, internal job posting, etc. Follow the instructions in the posting or ad; however, assume that the organization interviewing requests a cover letter and resume.
YOUR TASK: Write a professional Cover Letter and Resume and use it as application to the positing you have found under ‘Scenario’ above.
Create a professional, appealing image of yourself that will be reflected in the CL and Resume.
Upload the WA#4 cover letter and resume (include in the same document) to LEO as one attachment. (No feedback on a draft for this assignment. I will only review the final version.)
Information – Cover Letter:
· Use a Times New Roman Size 12 font.
· Design an attractive letterhead that includes your name and contact information. Don’t use a template that has your name in a large font because it distracts the reader from noticing more important information about your background.
· You may change the identifying information (ex. names of employers, your address, etc.) to protect confidential details about your background. However, use your real name so that I am able to grade the assignment easily.
· Consider using the four-paragraph format that some employers want: (1) opening paragraph that indicates the job title and where you saw the posting. Include a career highlight that answers this question: How do your qualifications match their requirements. (2) a paragraph about work, (3) paragraph about school, and (4) final paragraph that includes the fact that the resume is attached and an action close to let them know when, how, and where to contact you.
· You may reverse the school and work paragraphs and/or use a different format if it is better for your background.
· The strongest opening paragraph includes the fact that someone they value is referring you. You may invent this detail.
· Cover letters should only be one page, but you should use the appropriate page margins.
· Single space within paragraphs and double space between them.
· Realize many employers ask for cover letters as a literacy test to see how you write sentences and paragraphs.
· Proofread carefully because any errors on a cover letter can disqualify you.
Information – Resume:
· Keep in mind large /strange fonts or too many different point sizes distract the reader.
· Design an attractive letterhead that includes your name and contact information. Don’t use a template that has your name in a large font that distracts the reader from more important information about your background.
· Use appropriate headings.
· Include a job objective, which usually works best as a concise statement including a specific job title because employers use this information to categorize your application.
· Include a career summary section that provides highlights from your background.
· Include other sections that are relevant (ex. skills, education, work history, awards, etc.).
· Arrange the sections in a logical order. Put the employment section in front of education if you are an experienced professional. Don’t include information about high school.
· Use bullet points and sentence fragments appropriately. (Fragments are easier to read, so complete sentences are not preferred for resumes.)
· Resumes are usually one or two pages.
· Proofread carefully because any errors on a cover letter can disqualify you.
· ABOVE ALL BE CONSISTENT IN THE DESIGN AND TONE OF YOUR RESUME
