SUBJECT:   Proposal to Complete Training Project on Sexual Harassment in the Military

Introduction

Sexual Harassment is defined as unwanted sex related behavior that recipients take to be offensive, such as unwelcome verbal and nonverbal sexual behavior (Nielsen & Einarsen, 2012). This is a topic which is talked about in the workplace, school and homes. Please approve my project, Option 2, a business proposal on military sexual harassment in the workplace. The benefit for this project is to help employees on Military bases to understand the importance of respecting others. The project I am proposing would be sent to Major General Jeffery B. Clark, United States Army, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Bethesda, Maryland.

Statement of the problem

The purpose of this training would be to build on other training classes that have been provided on this topic with the hopes of decreasing sexual harassment in the military.

Audience analysis

Once this proposal is approved, I would like to host the training at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in the Clark Auditorium, located in building 10. My recommendation for this project would be mandated for all employees including military personnel and federal contractors to attend this training within a certain time-frame. This training will provide information or educate employees about sexual harassment whether subtle or overt and provide them with specific guidance regarding how and when to report unwanted activities in the workplace. This training will stress the importance of sexual harassment not being tolerated in the workplace and will also discuss the cause of action. If found guilty, an employee may be suspended without pay or terminated. I plan on conducting a questionnaire to gain a better working knowledge of my audience. The purpose of the questionnaire will be to gauge the employee’s population about sexual harassment awareness within the workplace. The results of the questionnaire will also identify specific areas of focus that will be addressed during the training. A question which will be asked is “how would you feel if someone made comments towards you in an unwanted sexual manner?” This question would be asked to a small group of about 4 or 5 students which would allow for everyone to gain knowledge about the student and their opinions.

Scope of the research

If granted the opportunity, the training will include five modules which would include federal and state laws, how to recognize sexual harassment, how to handle and what to do when you are being sexually harassed. How to avoid sexual harassment and finally, how to properly file a complaint against the person who has sexually harassed you. This training will also answer questions about an employer’s defense. I plan on discussing different situations that have occurred where a person was sexual harassed and failed to report it because they were scared of the outcome which may have an effect on someone.

Research methods

For this project, I will be interviewing two subject matter experts (SME), which would allow me to gain some of their opinions about this topic, as well as some experience they may have dealt with when it comes to sexual harassment. I plan on obtain information from the library and internet. The two SME’s which I will be interviewing would be Stephen Gross, Department Supervisor in Patient Administration and Kafilat Odu, Human Resource Manager, LLM Placements Contracting firm. This opportunity would allow employees to ask questions they may have about this topic and would allow the employees to gain more knowledge about sexual harassment in the workplace.

Cost and Qualifications

The cost of this training will range from $500 to $600. This will cover supplies needed for training such as pens, paper, videos and booklets. I am qualified to complete this project because I have taken and successful completed WRTG 391 advanced research writing, WRTG 393 advanced technical writing, COMM 300 communication theory and COMM 380 language in social context.
