ENGL 214: Discussion Board Instructions

As part of your course work, you are also expected to participate in the Discussion Board (DB), under the Discussions button on Blackboard. These DB’s basically take the place of classroom discussion and are designed to stimulate critical thinking about assigned readings. If you have a question that you think everyone in the class will benefit from having answered, please post to the General Forum , the first DB forum. In terms of addressing specific course material, you have seven scheduled DB’s this semester.

For each posting, you are asked to respond to the prompt; then, respond to your peers’ posts. Here are a few pointers to make the DB a valuable exercise for both you and your classmates, and to help you receive the best score possible:

  • The first step is to post an original response to the assigned DB the day it opens. This original post should be substantial: at least 2 0 0 words. (Note: 200 words = about two solid paragraphs.)

Next, you should respond to at least two peers on the DB. Your peer responses should be at least 1 0 0 words each. (Note: 100 words = about one solid paragraph)

  • How do you reach these word counts? Include examples from the poems; explain what you think, and analyze your observations!

    • I expect you to think about the question before answering and to add something valuable to the discussion. Just saying, “I agree with J. Brown,” is not an acceptable posting (and it will not help you or your peers excel on the DB). We have to know specifically what you agree with and, more importantly, why you agree.

    Please read over your comments before you post them for the entire class to read. Check your grammar and spelling. ENG 214 is an upper division course, and your work should reflect that level. I will most definitely mark down for poor mechanics.

    There is no upper limit on the number of comments you may post. I will read all of them.

    Make sure you complete your posts before 11:55 p.m. of the due date. Remember, I do not accept any late work. You are responsible for ensuring that your post is on time.

  • Read through all of the entries at the end of the DB session; you’ll gain from the exercise! (It will also help prepare you for the Midterm and Final exams.)

    • Rubric for DB participation: For each of your responses, you are given the opportunity to earn points—a total of 10 points per DB. The following scoring rubric will be used for grading DB entries.

    10 points: Original response to prompt is clearly developed (at least 200 words), and the writer discusses a specific idea; the writer’s responses to multiple peers (at least 100 words each) add to the discussion in a significant manner; there are zero grammatical errors.

    9 points: Original response to prompt is developed (at least 200 words), and the writer has something to say; responses to multiple peers (at least 100 words each) add to the discussion; there are few distracting grammatical errors.

    8 points: Original response to prompt is developed (at least 200 words); responses to two peers (at least 100 words each) add to the discussion; there are grammatical errors present.

    7 points: Original response to prompt is less clearly developed (does not reach 200 word minimum) with several grammatical errors; minimal interaction with peers (posts do not meet 100 word minimum) does not add to the overall discussion; there are several grammatical errors.

    6 points: Original response to prompt is not clearly developed (does not reach 200 word minimum) and has significant grammatical errors; writer makes one response to a peer that does not add to the discussion or several responses that simply agree with others; there are numerous grammatical errors.

    5 points and below : Original response to prompt only; no response to peers; the writer does not add any new material to the DB, or the grammatical errors obscure the meaning of the post.

    0 points: No submission, or a late submission.

    Note: you may want to print out this document for future reference. As you may notice on the Course Calendar, the Discussion Board (DB) is a significant component of this course (and your final grade); therefore, in order to do well in this course, it is important that you turn in consistently strong work for this assignment.
