The items that have a higher density than the water sink into the water, while items whose density is lower than that of the water float on the water. It is evident that the stone, glass and the bottle top all have a higher density than that of the water.

On the other hand, the plastic, the paper and the wood have a lower density than that of the water.

The rubber, pencil, the piece of paper and the plastic cup all float on the water, while the piece of stone, the piece of glass and the bottle top all sink into the jar filled with water.

Drop each of the materials into the jar filled with water, one at a time and note the reaction. Some of the items will float while others will sink.

In an experiment involving sinking and floating, plastics, wood and paper items float on the water while all items whose density is higher than that of water sink in to the water. The stones and glass have a higher density than the water, therefore they are expected to sink into the water.
