All over the developed world, people seem to love or at least lust after cars. Cars are among our most expensive possessions, and our most clear pieces of personal style, status, wealth, and political identity. Generally owning a car is important for people as it portrays status and the opportunity for personal control and individuality. Having a car for a person regardless of gender, occupation and lifestyle is important because it comes with the pursue of freedom as well as efficiency.

As automobiles became more widespread, the more the lives of people began to change. During this era, the suburbs were starting to become very common. The car played a great role in the spread of these suburbs. The family life was largely influenced and a much mobile society was established. Having your own means of transportation has always been important. In recent decades having your own car has become more prevalent and more important. There are many people relying on public means of transportation, and in densely populated cities with limited parking taxis are very popular. However for those in the suburbs and small towns, having your own car symbolizes freedom and independence.

Driving is usually the only option for independent mobility. Several studies have found that a greater majority of people indicate that giving up their vehicles would restrict their mobility and independence. Some people own their own cars as a way of expressing anxiety about the poor quality of public transport services. This anxiety seemed to be based on reality because a greater majority of respondents who already had given up driving felt public transport to be, at least in some measure, inadequate and uncomfortable and they experience a general feeling of uneasiness. Owning a car in sparsely populated areas is even more important, because it provides the only opportunity for long distance travelling due to a lack of a public means of transport.

Cars have become the main mean of transportation and intertwined in to the American lifestyle. Comparing to some other classical transportation, such as trains and planes, the automobiles is still the primary form of transportation. They are more convenient and accommodating for personal use,

Think for a moment what a car says about a person. Is it a sports car or is it a station wagon? Is it clean on the inside or washed regularly? People purchase cars at different price to satisfy themselves, some choose Tesla for the pursue of science, some choose Prius because they are more environmental- friendly. High-end cars like Mercedes, Bentley, represent social status and maturity while cars like Porsche, Lamborghini represent fashion sense. Cars offer a kind of freedom and independence most people aspire for. People have their own different uses or reasons for owning a car, some own their cars only to go to grocery shopping, some to commute to work, others to drive an hour or more just to go out.

The more the provision of alternative means of mobility, the more likely a person is to focus on owning their own cars depending on their socioeconomic capability and status.
