Grading Guide

Grading Key: Charts & Rationale

There are many correct ways for students to create a chart or charts to display the data. Evaluate the student’s choice(s) and rationale, and provide feedback about the suitability of their choice(s), with suggestions for other suitable types of chart/display techniques if the student requires that guidance.

Grading Key: Descriptive Statistics & Interpretation/Conclusions

Students have some flexibility in how they apply measures of central tendency and variability to the data set. They could do a single mean, median, mode, and standard deviation for the data set as an entirety. If they do, the values for those calculations are provided below for faculty reference.

Students could also elect to provide the mean for each of the provided dates, or could elect to calculate a mean for the period prior to Memorial Day (before the tourist season) and the mean for the period after Memorial Day (during the tourist season). Any of these choices could be acceptable. Evaluate the student’s choices and their interpretation/conclusion, and provide feedback about the suitability of their choices with suggestions for other approaches as needed.

Measures of Central Tendency and Variability for the Data Set (entirety):

· Mean: 85

· Median: 91

· Mode: 96

· Standard Deviation: 21
