Rhetorical Analysis of Bruce Ballenger

Are many students in the college have bad writings skills? This question has been contemplated for a long time. Due to the increasing number of students in the college who cannot write properly hence the question to become more relevant in the modern society. Bruce Ballenger the author, wrote on the “importance of the writing badly”. The essays sought to explain why most college students do not know how to write and thus it is important to write wrongly. Bruce give pertinent issues why it is important to allow students to write wrongly. “It does not take into consideration that the writing habits would manifest in someone hence becoming a problem to communicate with others in writing” (Ballanger, 75).

Bruce’s main argument through the essays their presumption that writing wrong facilitates students to learn easily things that they do not know. He argues that students easily find their voices when they write wrongly. He argues students have been having a problem of writing since they were young. This is seen the teacher was young he/she was having problems dealing with the English. The argument is that it was necessary to encourage the student to write wrongly then correct mistakes later. The thesis statement would; therefore, is there any improvement in language when a student writes wrongly then later corrects on their grammar mistakes.

Bruce makes the use of rhetorical appeals of the ethos, pathos, and logos effective through the essay. The rhetorical appeal on the pathos is used to help the promotion of the view that college’s students and the teacher cannot write properly (Ballanger, 74). The argument is that it is important for them to write wrongly so that they can improve their writing skills. He describes his experience on the problem of writing. In addition, it is Captivate since after being a tutor he still fined the problem of writing that is really bad. Therefore, he prefers to teach students using wrong writing skills.

The essay of the Bruce makes most salient points that support his arguments. However, many fallacies that Bruce engages negates some of the argument used to support the claim. Bruce claims that student would improve their writing skills when they write wrongly by encouraging them to speak their voices then later on they can correct the mistakes. This statement would make the presumptions that poor writing skills translates to correct writing skills. When a student practices poor writing skill he/she development the culture thus becoming impossible for them to correct.” Again poor writing skills would mean that the student would have poor communications hence becoming hard to express themselves” (Ballanger, 73).

Bruce embraces the use of ethos throughout his essay. Bruce identifies us the writer as the teacher who illustrate to us the problems that the student is facing. The authority of the writer is established because he addresses pertinent issues that affect the students he is the teacher. The writer is gender sensitive because feminism is a mention through the essay. Bruce clearly balances all the dissenting opinions by silent speaking about it. He says that the teacher finds it hard to teach the students correct writing. We know that this point negates that is not only the student who has poor writing skills. The information here very crucial to the audience because it points out the problems of educations sectors.

Bruce uses logos appeals effectively. He clearly demonstrates this by detailing his personal experiment the school with his teacher. The doctor tells him that the book the students cannot read because it contains a lot of grammatical errors (Ballanger, 74). He justifies the reason for writing wrongly that it improves the voice of the students thus facilitating good writing skills. He argues that you write wrongly first the later own you correct it. Through this way, you will improve your writing skills. He also uses the example of the lack of his ability to teach students well as the justification of the importance to write poorly. The teacher justifies his/her problem of failing to write correctly as a problem he/she inherited long time when she way young (Ballanger, 73).

Bruce uses another fallacy that has the problem when teaching the students to be good writers. It is more ironical in nature that a person who has undergone teaching training cannot teach students well. This means that in fact the problem of poor writing skills does not lie to the student but rather with teachers who are supposed to be their mentor. The poor teaching methods of the teacher result to having the college student who cannot write properly. This irony makes it more interesting because both the student and the teacher is affected (Ballanger, 73).

Bruce fails to recognize that as the person progress academically their writing skills would improve because they will be exposed to many things. He does not consider that learning is a continuous process. Also he fails to recognize that these students can be slow learners; hence, they take a lot of time to integrate information. He also fails to consider there exist various prudent method on how the student can improve their writing skills without any problem. This forms the basis of the counter arguments (Ballanger, 75). This makes some arguments to be invalid because it cannot hold waters thus need to analyze it deeply. Bruce tries to justify the importance of writing wrongly but it cannot stand in modern society.

.. Bruce’s essay makes the very strong argument on why it is importance for students to practice poor writing skills as a method to improve their language. He demonstrates that writing wrongly would improve their voices hence fostering their writings habits. The fact that he has the problem teaching his student on how to write properly and make as an excuse to allow them to write badly is an absurd thing. To curb the problem education system should improve so that students learn good writings skills when they are young. All stakeholders should come up with relevant solutions because communicating is the heart of living. “Every student should be able to communicate effectively” (Ballanger, 73).
