Discourse community refers to a group of individuals sharing a common goal or characteristic. The group is guided by a common principle that helps it achieve its short-term and long-term targets. The uniqueness of a discourse community is the defining factor. Non-academic and academic discourse communities have a connection as one community can influence another. While some features like language and culture could be exclusive to a given discourse community, both can export and import ideas from their lessons. This paper focuses on athletics discourse community by examining into the language, culture, and ways of communicating, audiences and their influence.
The main goal of an athletics discourse community is winning. Athletes always aim to achieve the best of every input and potential they posses. Athletes want to become stronger, faster, bigger and smarter in all their adventures. For instance, a football player has to build stamina and strength so that they can withstand the toughness of the game. Thus, athletics requires operating within specified values of hard work, humble attitude, and moral ethic. Athletics calls for respect to all especially the coaches and team leaders. Essentially, teamwork is a basic entity in an athletics community. In a football match, the striker cannot add value if they do not coordinate with the mid-fielder and other teammates in the court. Building trust among the teammates is a value evident in an athletics community.
Athletics acquire their skills by observing and practicing. This means that they require a coach and a mentor as well as a role model they look up to. Improving skills requires continuous practice, commitment, and consistency. Therefore, personal and field discipline is critical in an athletics community. Rules and regulations apply to athletes. In order to achieve success, sacrifice and adopting a defined lifestyle is mandatory. For example, changing one's diet is inevitable. Feeding on junk and too much alcohol is prohibited in an athletics discourse community so that the athletes can remain focused and lead a healthy life for better performances.
The typical genres of an athletics discourse community include yelling, whistles, cadences, and playbook and coach speech. Yelling makes an athletic event complete; the participants and spectators shout as a way of expressing their deep connection with the game. Yelling also motivates players in the field. Whistle is a feature that is used as a means of communication and giving direction while a match or an event in on-going. The referee does not have to shout, but a whistle blow is enough for the audiences and athletes to respond. The coach cannot miss yelling at a player during training as well as during actual matches. The yelling of a coach is a way of drawing attention of the play; pointing out to him or her, that they are either making mistakes or they need to up their game against the opponent.
The genres are characterized by norms like a celebration, aggressive tones, loud, intense mannerisms and a lot of blasphemy. A celebration is a crowning event that cannot miss during or after an athletic action. The winning team will always celebrate their hard work and the ability to beat their opponents. Nevertheless, individuals that break their personal bests also celebrate their improvements even if there are not the ultimate winners. A lot of profanity is a norm in an athletics discourse community as individuals mock and curse an occurrence especially when beaten. Charged emotions causes adrenaline rush among the athletes and the audiences leading to aggressive tones and loudness. During a marathon, when the athletes approach the finish line and are fighting for the first position, shouting and aggression is unavoidable
Strategizing and analyzing matches is imperative in athletics as it helps players realize their mistakes as well as learn the tactics of their opponents. This prepares the athletes to hit the road with strength and confidence of winning. A team comes together to study the opponents they expect to compete against, study their history, their strategies and establish ways of countering. This will include collecting a team that can manage their opponents. It also means practicing more than before.
Athletics involves recognition, rewards and appreciation for efforts. Whether it is an individual or group events, members are rewarded for their hard work. Rewarding motivates athletes to be the best at what they do. Naming an individual as the player of the year rates the individual highly while motivating others to also work hard for the recognition. A good player in a soccer game gives the individual an edge to be sought after by high paying clubs. Athletes make money from their activities; they are paid for being a member of a certain club and also for wins. Athletics is a competitive affair, lagging behind may be a sign of failure
Athletics discourse community has a close connection with the academic discourse. The main target goal in both discourses is winning; being the best. Just like a soccer game, a statistics class requires practice and more practice. Writing needs continuous practice with reading widely. Athletics and academic discourse communities call for analysis of a past mistake or excellence. Failure during a previous academic session needs critical analysis so that the necessary measures can be established and implemented. Consistency and commitment, as well as sacrifice, are essential values in an academic discourse. An athlete sacrifices their leisure time for practice just like a student does for revision and assignment. Team work is also a virtue that can be exported from an athletics discourse community to academic community. Since not all students will be good at everything, they may have to seek assistance from their colleagues. Also, group work requires a trusting and committed teammate.
Excellence being the eventual outcome of an athletic event or academics, a specified group of audience influences it. Family and friends serve as the basic audience for both an athletic and academic discourse communities. They are the ones that offer support and criticism during failure and success. However, in an athletics discourse community, the general public is a vital audience that play a greater role through their antics, yelling and celebrating.
Listening and following instructions is essential for success. Athletes listen to their coaches and adhere to the set rules and regulations otherwise risking summoning to the disciplinary committee or expulsion from a team. In an academic community, students are expected to adhere to the rules and policies. Misbehaving and failure to meet the institutions or group targets also amounts to disciplinary actions. Matches played and won or lost are used to gauge the ability of players and an athletic team. In an academic discourse community, a test result determines the suitability of a student
