Tools for Geodesign

Introduce

Geoplanner for ArcGIS is a browser-based application produced by ESRI, and the purpose of it is to support land-related planning and design activities for land planners. Overall, based on ArcGIS Online empowers all the abilities of ArcGIS Online from the user management subsystem to the map engine, to the core analysis services; frankly, Geoplanner for ArcGIS is only an extended application template for ArcGIS Online which everyone can publish their own templates.

Geoplanner consists of seven major features which are also a workflow from the first one to the last one (Figure 1): project, data, assess, create, evaluate, compare, and report. These features imbue Geoplanner with specific land-related process characteristics. In addition, to use the Geoplanner, you need to have a user account associated with an ArcGIS Online organizational subscription. http://training.esri.com/Courses/GeoPlanner/Media/GeoPlannerWorkflow.png

Geoplanner web course provides exercises for us to propose plans for meeting some of the requirements laid out by the TRIP (Transportation, Recreation, and Infrastructure Plan), with public access and recreational activities in Valles Caldera improved while preserving its natural beauty and resources.

Major Steps and Criteria

After you logged in Geoplanner for ArcGIS with an associated account, the first thing carried out was creating a Geoplanner for ArcGIS project using a predefined template named “VallesCalderaTemplate_GeoPlanner.” Then assessment layers had to be created using Geoplanner tools according to some given criteria that included trails, roads, campgrounds, and other places were planned to increase human contact; under project purposes, various factors were weighed differently; for example, landcover GAP was 25; wildland fire potential was 40; insect and disease risk was 35. Configuring gauges and sketch designs in Geoplanner was an important step soon afterwards. Charts and assessment layers can be employed to sketch in a new scenario. Comparing or sharing scenarios was convenient ways to concurrently estimated by one or more groups people.

Geoplanner Tutorials

The purpose of the Geoplanner tutorials is to introduce some basic processes of Geoplanner for ArcGIS, to add data and create assessment layers, to create new scenarios and create new features, to compare and evaluate alternatives, and to create and publish your own templates.

Major Steps and Criteria

Because of introducing some basic features and a whole workflow of how to utilize it in a practical project, a quick tour of the user interface and project information was the initial step. After that, data is inevitable ranked in second to-do list, because without data, the later processes cannot be conducted. Subsequently, to create new scenarios, new features owning differing meanings were must-have. Comparing and evaluating alternatives provided a reference for the designed project. Finally, in a group or an organization, templates created and published defined the basic and must-have data and functions.

How the Tool Incorporates Principles and Techniques of Geodesign and is improved

In both exercises, Geoplanner for ArcGIS is the tool used for achieving different purposes whether it is knowing the basic processes or carrying out a practical task. The thought of Geodesign, defined as conducting design or plan in a geographic context, is imbued into Geoplaner and embodied into the whole workflow of Geoplanner.

CityEngine is an amazing and useful tool for enhancing the ability of the two conducted scenarios. CityEngine can help you transform 2D to 3D models that show you a more comprehensive and intuitive information for the users and stakeholders. By the 3D model of the two scenarios, the planners or the analysts can find the subtle and hidden details which at times are neglected.
