Stage 1: The Artifact
· What element of this piece stands out to you the most?
· What would you guess is the rhetorical goal of this piece?
· In what ways does the piece achieve that goal?
· Describe the discourse community to which this piece seems to belong.
· Imagining yourself as the intended audience of this piece, what would you say are its weaknesses?
Stage 2: The Essay
· Describe what the introduction does to get your attention.
· What seems to be the essay’s thesis idea? Is that idea clearly stated in the introductory paragraph?
· Look at the topic sentence of each body paragraph and answer the following questions in regards to each:
· Does this topic sentence make a claim in support of the essay’s thesis?
· If no, is there such a claim made elsewhere in the paragraph?
· If yes, does the paragraph provide evidence to support this claim?
· In what way does each body paragraph transition into the next?
· In what way does the concluding paragraph of the essay give you a sense of closure?
