Read Doublespeak by William Lutz and write an essay of at least 250 words, consider the issues at hand and post a statement of your thoughts on it, being sure to address the following: 1. Give a brief evaluation of the article. Do you agree with Lutz? Do you disagree? Explain. 2. The article was written in 1988. Is doublespeak still a problem in our country today? More so or less so than Lutz describes? Explain. 3. Find at least one specific example of doublespeak(within the last five years) on the internet(in news articles, advertising, etc.)and provide a complete internet address. If you are quoting someone, be sure to use quotations and give a full reference. For your example, be sure to explain which of the four categories of doublespeak--euphemism, jargon, gobbledygook, or inflated language-best describes your example. When selecting your examples, remember that the use of these is not always Doublespeak. YOU MAY NOT USE: 1. An example from the Doublespeak Award website, Michele Damron's Doublespeak Website, NCTE Doublespeak Award website, etc. 2. An example from a generic examples of doublespeak website(to include military example, business examples, political examples, etc.). 3. Fictional examples(for example, stay away Disney examples on tvtrope.org, but also books, comic, television, movies, etc. 4. A book(in the past, I've had some try to use Amazon.com links to a book as their example---it doesn't work 5. Academic articles, newspaper articles, etc., that is written about the topic of Doublespeak, or any of its forms.
