Sugary Cereal: Breakfast Candy or Obesity Cure
Main Points
The main points from the article are:
· The companies that sell cereals give information that would be misleading to parents.
· Targeting children in adverts is controlled by some regulations but some of the cereal companies are agitating for a drop of some of the administration regulations that address matters pertaining to marketing of children food.
· While there are a number of research studies that give insights about the importance and value of a cereal breakfast to children, most of such studies have been conducted by cereal companies themselves.
· By comparing children cereals and adult cereals, children cereals have 85% more sugars and 65% less fiber.
· For better nutritional value on cereals for children, cereal companies should consider improving nutritional quality of their cereals and other foods for the betterment of the health of the children who will be consuming these foods.
Discussion Questions i) In your own view, who bears the primary ethical responsibility of ensuring that what is marketed to children or what they consume is best for their health? Is it the government that regulates the market, companies that manufactures the product, or the parent who buys the product for the children?
ii) Is there any need to involve the children in matters pertaining to the control and regulation of consumption of cereals given that they are the target consumers?
iii) From the article, it is clear that there might be other factors contributing to the better health for those who consume a cereal breakfast, despite the fact that children’s cereals contain more sugars that are recommended for children. Which side of the contradicting aspects, that is high amount sugars vs. documented better health, would you consider in making a choice on whether your child should eat children’s breakfast cereals or not.
