In the excerpt written by Jose Antonio Burciaga, from his work titled “Tortillas”, Jose has expanded his viewpoint on the meaning on tortillas (the food) and what they meant to him. Burciaga grew up in Mexico which is where his experience with tortillas originally started. He reminisced with all five senses about his initial encounters with tortillas. History facts were also thrown into his essay, some of which include tortilla made foods and where they originated. He sums up his essay simply stating that “while the tortillas may be a lowly corn cake, when the necessity arises, it can reach unexpected distinction.” (Burciaga). The meaning behind this essay shows that specifically food can be a cross cultural enjoyment and can be modified to create new dishes. More broadly this applies to people as well as interests. The tortilla, like people and interests, have developed their own sort of personalities that can be molded based on the circumstances that surround them. His summary stating that simplicity can be made divine in the right hands, also marries perfectly with my comparison and a famous saying, “one man’s trash is another mans treasure.”
