Dreams of Trespass Essay

The culture is different between countries, societies and religions, for example, the American’s culture it is not same as the culture in Middle East (Arab’s culture) or Africa’s culture. Even though some region inside America has different culture. Such as, the Amish in Pennsylvania Ohio, they live in America but they have different culture than another Americans. They are not interesting in technology such as, driving cars and using companies’ goods, they more relay on the farm harvests. However, The book “dreams of Trespass” also discuss more about the cultures. In Fez city were Mernissi is a young girl explains her life inside frontier “hudud”, which explain more about women’s life and how they survived to live inside these frontiers. Fez is a city in Morocco, and it is divided to two main parts the north, was controlled by the Christians, and they other side was controlled by Muslims. That’s the main reason for frontiers to appear, to separate the Muslims from Christians. The fear is another main character in this novel; the fear causes separation between women and men, also between French and Moroccan. There are two main parts that lead to separation, the frontiers and fear.

In Fez, the men made the frontiers, and the idea behind these frontiers is to keep the women separate form the life outside the harem. The frontiers actually are not physical walls, it just as the author refereed as “the minds of the powerful” (Mernissi, 3). Which means that frontiers are the power of men to get control over women inside the harem. Mernissi asks questions about these frontiers but no answered for her questions, because in harem you do not necessarily ask questions to get answers (Mernissi, 22). But Mernissi sees how hudud, or frontiers are changing everything about her, so she decided that she must know how exactly it works. Also, she describe that frontiers are the minds of the powerless for women inside the harem. Mernissi said that the anxiety eats at me whenever I cannot situate the geometric line organizing my powerlessness, which shows that frontiers have big affect on women life. However, women in side the harem are not at the same of power or powerless. For example, Mernissi’s mother is one of the most powerful women in the novel, she can stand up to her husband. One example shows that frontier has affect in Mernissi’s mother with respect the other affects like all these families have to live together and the painful struggling to get their own individuality. The mother always dreams about living alone with father and her kids, “whenever heard of ten birds living together squashed into a single nest”(Mernissi, 77). Here the mother supports the hard life inside the harem, she said it is not normal to live in house with large number of people, or the idea of that to make people feel miserable. (Mernissi, 77).
