The importance of project management planning is to understand that a project takes a lot planning to before it is a success. One must ensure that all parts of a project come together at the right times (Schwalbe, 2014). Understanding the process of project management helps any project be a success. This involves the initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and finally closing out the project. This requires the many document during this process like the project management plan and the project charter.

During my time at Excelsior, I have develop a project management plan for a vintage style radio. I have learn during this project that the cost of staffing is quite high. As I continue with this project and everything that I have learned in this class will make this project a success.

Outcome 12

Demonstrate the ability to assist in the creation and execution of an effective project plan.

Performance Indicator

•Describe experiences with project life cycle issues

•Discuss the importance of management planning

•Elaborate on issues relating to risk analysis, task scheduling, and resource scheduling

Learning Statements

•Properly managing risk with any project is a essential and necessary task. Manage risk effectively and the benefits can be huge. Manage risk poorly and the losses can be equally huge.

• Prioritizing risks is essential to effective risk management. The project manager must have the ability to prioritize risk and clearly identify which risk are acceptable to take and those that are not acceptable to take.

•The ability to plan and implement risk response is another crucial step in risk management. For every risk identified the project manager must have a clear plan in place for how to deal with a risk once it occurs. Poor risk management planning can leading to project failure. Conversely, proper risk management planning can lead to a successful project.

Learning Statements

I have learned a lot in my 17-year military career. I have been part of countless teams. I have played the part of both follower and leader. In the military we deal with risk analysis almost constantly. We strive to do the best job possible in the fastest amount of time while still being fully committed to safety.

I have also demonstrated my ability in task scheduling. We as SNCO’s are constantly leading teams. Constantly, we struggle with getting everything done. So we have to prioritize our tasks. This helps us tackle the most important jobs first.

And in today’s budgetary constraints, we have to prioritize how we use our resources as well. This not only includes what and how we buy things. But it also means using our manpower appropriately and efficiently. We are constantly given the task to do more with less. So good resource stewardship is paramount during all phases of project management.

After taking the IT 390 Information technology project management course, I am able to better elaborate on issues relating to risk analysis, task scheduling, and resource scheduling. This class has given me the tools needed to be a successful project manager.
