Quality
One thing that will make Rage energy drink stand out among its competitors is the quality of the drink. To ensure consistency in the production process, the company uses synthetically produced ingredients. The product will also be double checked in the production line by employees using the help of computerized systems. Industry Analysis and Trends
Global energy drink sales reached $50 in the year 2014. That was an increase of 5% as compared to the sales that were made in 2013 (Fontinelle, 2015). Energy drinks fall under the soft drinks category that includes carbonated beverages, vegetable and fruit juices, and sports drinks bottled water, and ready to drink tea. Nowadays consumers are buying more of the energy drinks than the soda. That is why the energy drinks sales have grown rapidly. According to the research firm called Euromonitor International, the markets that are expected to be the most important for the growth of energy drinks are U.S, Brazil, and China.
The research also has estimated that the market for energy drinks is expected to grow by more than 10% by the year 2016. The growth rate is expected due to rise in population and also the consumption of the energy drinks. This is because the energy drinks are expected to penetrate untapped market segments including the older population.
Strategic Position & Risk Assessment
The strategic position that will be taken by the company will be market share strategy. The strategy will ensure that the company is able to reach out directly to the targeted customers other than reaching out to a large group of individuals with a small concentration of the targeted customers. The targeted customers are youths and young adults and to reach out to them, the company will market the product through the social media as well as sponsoring events such as sports and concerts that attract a huge number of individuals in this particular category.
Distribution Channels
Since not all the consumers are near the plant where the manufacturing will be done, there is a need for a well-established distribution channel. Generally, the drink will reach the customers through major retailers such as supermarkets and grocery. Because the company is going to start its operations in Virginia Beach and its surroundings, it will be possible to make use of air, rail, buses and van services. Vans can also be used to supply those interior areas where the train cannot access. The vans will take the drink to either end user or the retailers for customers to access it from there. The company can also make use of Norfolk International
Airport to take Rage drinks to other States that are far away from Norfolk. Trains can be used to serve stores that are found in Petersburg and Richmond while Vans can be used to transport products to nearby cities like Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and Suffolk. The company will also use online platforms to sell the drink. Here there will be a special team of employees that will be tasked with the responsibility of taking the orders as well as supplying the orders the customer. The online orders will have a separate storing facility within the plant. Shipping around town will be taken care of by the company while those far away will include standard shipment fees.

Strengths
Competent Team
My friend and I will work to attaining our full potential. Being surrounded by individuals like Ian Glass, who has many years of experience while working in PepsiCo we are confident we are going to work well. We also have marketing knowledge from school as well as a computer expert who will utilize the technology that we are using in manufacturing the beverage.
Brand Identity
The firm does not want to rely on word-of-mouth marketing. It has created a brand image. It also has product impression that connects the drink to young people and adventure related sports. Rage knows that it has to reach the young people so that they can promote the drink.
Needs and Demands
Rage energy drink will be sweet and will aim at giving consumers high rates of energy. It contains taurine, caffeine, and b vitamins. Rage will satisfy both physical and social needs of the consumers.
Opportunities
Extension of Product Line
Rage will kick start by producing only one product unlike global beverage firms like Coca-Cola and Pepsi. These global firms are known for various products on different production lines. Therefore, Rage targets growth within the first two years of operation that can enable it to collect enough profits. This profit will then be used to expand the company by extending its product line. Through that, they will offer their consumers with multiple choices.
Advertising and Partnership
Through advertisements, Rage Company is going to create awareness too many people. This will make the customers purchase the product, and if they feel satisfied by it, they will definitely have to buy it again and again. Rage is also willing to start a new venture by partnering with social media companies like Facebook. Since Facebook is the most popular social utility that connects many people around the globe, it will be nice to partner with them so that they can help in advertising the product.
Weaknesses
Higher Price
The price of Rage Energy Drink is higher compared to the prices of other energy drinks like Red Bull and Monster. This is likely to restrict the customers from buying it since it is a new product in the market.
Attract New Consumers and Retain Consumers
The target audience of the Rage is young consumers, especially 15 to 35 years. However, the question is, will the people still access the product since they are growing older, and soon some of them will be beyond 35 years old. However, the main challenge is the way the company will attract the next young generations.
Threats
Consumer Awareness
Technology and science are developing day in day out. Through technology and science, people gain access to a lot of information. Customers are nowadays getting information about the product before they purchase it. They can use the internet to compare different prices of different products. This is a challenge because they can choose to buy alternative drinks. Consumers always put their health conditions first. Therefore, they will buy only healthier drinks.
Competition
This is the greatest challenge that Rage faces. Rage need to come up with strategies that give it an advantage in the market against their competitors.
Health Concern and Social Responsibility
Many experimental tests and media have proved that energy drinks affect consumers’ health due to high intake of caffeine. Caffeine or other stimulants may affect the heart and also blood pressure of a client. E.g. Red Bull was banned in Denmark and also France due to some concerns from the consumers. Therefore, Rage knows that it needs to put forward the health of its consumers so that it can benefit from society.
Risks
There are three types of risks that the company is bound to face. These include market risk, completion risks and regulatory risk. The company will be facing a marketing risk because the targeted customers may not embrace the product as expected. To counter this, the company will have to increase the product awareness so that they can be able to know the specific benefits of the product. Secondly, the company is also bound to face competition risks when new competitors enter the market and therefore resulting to a very tight competition. To overcome this, the company will ensure that is enhances its operation procedures so as to reduce its operation and manufacturing costs. This will give Rage a completive advantage in a tightly competitive market. Finally, the company is also facing the risk of falling short of FDA regulations resulting from human or machine errors. There is also a particular way that the cans containing the drink should be labeled according to FDA standards and this might be a risk if not adhere.
Target Market
Consumer Data
The product is targeting individuals who are considered as young adults. These are the individuals who are of the age of between 15-35 years. This group of individuals is made up of energetic people who are most likely to be interested in energy intensive activities. That is the main reason they will always be coming back for our product. The first category is the group of individuals under the age of 21. These are the individuals who are of the age between 15 years and 21 years. This category is made up individual who are in high school level. The other category is the group of individuals of the age of 21 years to 35 years. This group is composed of college students and young adults who have just completed their college and have started working.
The level of income for this category of individuals ranges from $25,000 - $35,000. The City of Virginia Beach has a total population of 437,994 individuals. Out of this 30,380 individuals are of the age group 15-19 years, both male and female, (Factfinder.census.gov, 2015). The total number of individuals who are of the age of 21-35 years is 120,673 individuals, (Factfinder.census.gov, 2015).This is an indication that the area has a large number of the targeted customers, and there is a ready market for the soft drinks as long as they are reached out to effectively and efficiently. These are individuals who are normally engaged in the various sports available at their disposal especially those who are in school and they are part of the school team in any of the games. For those who are not in school, the energy drink is still convenient for keeping them awake and focused as well as giving them the energy to complete their tasks. From the above data, the company can then be able to come up with specific sales and marketing strategies that will be focused on capturing them as the new customers for the energy drink, (Varey, 2002). The company, therefore, needs to ensure that the message about the energy drink reaches out to these group of individuals.
Brand loyalty
Brand loyalty will be determined by the behavior of the consumers as well as their preferences. It is, therefore, important for the organization to make the product one that the targeted customers can prefer to what is already in the market. Indeed, a good number of the targeted customers are already using some of the leading energy drinks like Red Bull and Monster. Before getting the consumer loyalty, the first thing that will have to be done is to ensure that that a good number of the estimated customers are aware of the products and purchase it. When that happens, they will then be able to practically realize the advantages choosing the energy drink as opposed to the competitor product like Red Bull and Monster. This means that the product has to take sufficiently care of the needs of the customers and when the feel that they are getting value for their money, they will always come back for more of the energy drink. The product should fulfill all the aspects of its value spelled out in the advertisements. This move will make the customer value and respect the product, and when that happens they will be buying the product without thinking about convenience or price and that develops into customer loyalty.
Competition
Competitor Analysis
The beverage industry, specifically energy drinks, just like the case of soft drinks, is dominated by big players such as Red Bull and Monster, who have been in business for decades. This means that the company has to have an effective marketing plan to ensure that it can gain its own market share from the targeted customers in the presence of the big players. The company will, therefore, use its proximity to the nearby market as its competitive advantage. One of the ways that the company can compete with the competitors mentioned above is by reducing the production costs and operation costs as much as possible, (Cohen, 2006). This will substantially reduce the cost of the energy drink thus making it more likely to be purchased by customers as opposed to the more expensive competitors drinks.
The potential future competitors are the players in the soft drink industry because customers are getting more concerned about consuming healthy products that add value their health. There have been some research and studies that have been conducted to determine whether or not soft drinks have links to some of the common medical conditions. Even though none of these studies have had positive results, there is a growing concern for individual to have the need to consume products that add great value to their bodies regarding nutrition. This could mean the reduction in sales of the soft drinks, and this is what might prompt the manufacturers to venture into the energy drinks sector. One of the barriers that the new companies entering the market may face is that the negative perception of their products might affect their ability to launch successfully and sell their new energy drinks.
Marketing Plan and Sales Strategy
Marketing Plan
In addition to reducing the production and operation costs, Range will also have to focus on effective and efficient ways of reaching out to the potential customers. The use of technology will go a long way in ensuring that the company can realize this. The company will develop a website that is attractive enough to catch the attention of the customers. The targeted customers are individuals who are well known for their frequent use of the internet on a daily basis, (Luther, 2011). With this in mind, the company can, therefore, reach out to these individuals through the
social media. Through sites like Facebook and Twitter, the consumers will be informed of about the product and this information will emphasis on how beneficial the drink is regarding providing energy to the users, (Grewal & Levy, 2010). The company will also use search engine optimization to ensure that its website rank among the result top return by the major search engines when internet users are searching for energy drinks. This will be possible by putting keywords in the website that can easily be picked up by the search engine crawlers.
Sales Strategy
The message of the company will be clarified using the Five Fs of marketing. To begin with, Range will have to ensure that the management, as well as the employees, are focusing on the goals and objectives of the organization with regards to marketing. The goals of the marketing strategy are to build the brand. It is, therefore, important for the marketing team ensure that each of the steps taken and the message being conveyed to the customers is building the brand. The message being conveyed will be focused on what makes the Range Energy drink standout among its competitors, (Cohen, 2006). The marketing team needs to meet on a regular basis to ensure that everyone is on the same page on the types of ads that will be used in the social media. Secondly, we will also focus on the flavor of the energy drink, the secret ingredient. To avoid getting mediocre results, customers have to get exactly what they will gain from consuming the product because of its secret ingredient that adds them more energy to help them undertake their day to day activities.
The third thing that will be taken into account it foresight that involves planning for the
worst that may happen. This means that the marketing team will come up with a plan ‘B’ in the event that things do not go according to plan. The result is that the company will not encounter huge losses as a result of the time and resources that will be used to go back to the drawing board. A plan is an invaluable asset especially when a disaster strikes a company. The other thing that will be considered is the flexibility of the marketing and sales plan, (Luther, 2011). The plan needs to be able to change depending on both the foreseen and unforeseen circumstances. This will ensure that the quick thinking and action of the marketing individuals becomes successful because they can still fit in the marketing plan even though they were not included earlier.
Finally, it also important to ensure that the marketing team has fun when developing and implementing the plan. Planning an effective and strategic marketing plan can be a very stressfully venture and it is, therefore, important for the team to engage in activities that they enjoy doing during the process. This will greatly improve the quality of their work which will translate to the success of the plan, (Nykiel, 2003).
The company will also focus on a way of ensuring that employees who are not having fun can also enjoy the whole process of planning. The company will majorly focus on online marketing to advertise the energy drink. There is a variety of online avenues that can be explored to achieve this move. The company will focus on websites advertising and social media advertising. In the web advertising, the marketing teams will come up with burners and photos that will be used to attract customers to view the company website, (Grewal & Levy, 2010). Once they view the website, they will be able to get more information about the energy drink regarding how beneficial it is to their health and where they can purchase it. Also, through the social media the company will be able to reach out the potential customers while they are interacting with their friends and families. The second vehicles that the company will use is sponsoring events such as the Neptune Festival and Boardwalk Art Show and Festival. This will see it through that the participants of the festival know more about the company and its products, and they will, therefore, be more likely to buy the drink next time they visit a supermarket for their supplies.
Market Share Trends
Red Bull, just like any other company beverage company has been faced with some challenges that have threatened its very existence. The company has however managed to make it through the hurdles to gain a market share of 70%-90% in more than 100 countries in the global market. According to the company’s 2011 financial report, the company realized a revenue of 4.25 billion euros. In 2014, the company managed to sell 5.6 million cans across 170 countries in the global market. A research conducted in the United States revealed that Red Bull was the leading energy drink in the United States. The company believes in creating a market for its product as reflected in the world of its founder Dietrich Mateschitz. Companies like the |Coca-Cola have tried venturing into the energy drink sector but did not manage to compete for the strong market share that Red Bull has developed. It is, therefore, important for the organization to come up with an effective marketing plan that will not only capture that attention of the targeted consumers but also give them a reason to prefer their product to Red Bull, (Hussey & Jenster, 2000).
Operation, Technology, and Management Plan
Operation Plan
The operations plan will cover all the aspects regarding how the business will be running its operations. To begin with, the operation plan will cover the workflow that will be dealt with in the company to make the ideas turn into a reality. Here, the aspects that will be covered will include the following elements. One of the elements that will be covered will be supply chain and this one will include the individual that will be supplying the company with materials that will be used in the manufacturing process of the energy drink. The metal cans for packaging the drinks will be supplied by the Ardagh Group. Water will be obtained from the city’s water system and this will be recycled. The recycling process will go a long way in ensuring that the company does not spend a lot of money on water considering that the manufacturing process will require a lot of water. This will greatly reduce the operation costs.
The inventory of the company will be operated in the offices located within the manufacturing plant. The close proximity to the manufacturing plant will make it easy for the top management to oversee the operations of the plant easily. With regards to the personnel, the company will employee a total of 200 employees. Even though the company is investing in the use of modern technology, there is still need for human labor to take care of certain tasks that so as to provide more employment opportunities for the people Virginia Beach. The staff will be well structured with each production line having a supervisor that will be reporting to the production manager. The production manager will in turn report to the senior vice president who will then report to the CEO.
Minimal operation costs is one of the aspects that the company will be focusing on as its competitive advantage. This is because taking other methods such as price wars can be a very ineffective method especially when one considers the fact that other players such as Red Bull have been in the game long enough and they therefore have the ability to engage in a price war and still be able to make profits. Taking that step will only mean losses for Rage as a company. However, focusing reducing the cost of production and operation will ensure that the company enhances its efficiency by producing at lower costs that will attract lower prices. Also the facility will be rented by the company and over time as business grow, the company will be able to develop its own manufacturing plant. This will also go a long way in saving on the costs that will be incurred in financing construction. The money can be used to finance to other activities such as purchasing vats and refrigerators that will be used for storing the drinks.
The company will distribute the products through retailers such as grocery stores and super markets that reach out to the customers directly. There will also be an online platforms that will enable customers to order for the drink and the company will ship the drink to their places. Shipment will depend on the location, (Dumas, 2013). Those individuals within Virginia Beach will receive shipment for free while those further away will have to incur the standard shipment costs. The company is also focusing on coming up with more brands so as to be able to keep up with the market developments. Even though the company does not have a new product in development, we are anticipating to come up with a new project based on customer feedback.
The company will also engage in research and development activities that will see it through that the company develops new and high quality variety of products. The research will include conducting questionnaires to get to know the new brands that they would prefer from the company, (Waxman, 2013). This will be benefit the company by growing its product line thus increasing the revenue streams.
Technology Plan
The company will be embracing the use of technology so as to reduce operation costs as much as possible. The technology will provide an efficient and convenient way for the company to manage its employees as well as run its daily operations. To begin with, the company will use advanced employee management systems that will be used to manage employee in the manufacturing plant. The system will see it thought that the plant is divided into different sections and employees will be able to access the various levels based on their clearance levels. The different sections will be accessed using employees cards that will also be serving as their access card. This will be an effective way of reducing unnecessary movements within the organization thus greatly increasing their productivity and efficiently to the benefit of the organization as a whole, (Waxman, 2013).
The company will also use cloud system that will enable employees from different departments within the company to access important information regarding their duties and responsibilities such as customer information. This move will be very important for the company because it will not only reduce the amount of paper work but also create a system where employees can access real time information within the shortest time possible. Each employee will be register in the system and they will be able to create their unique password. Just like the different sections of the manufacturing plant, the cloud system will also be based on the clearance level of the employees. This will see it that only the employee who have the clearance to access a particular set of information access them. As a result, the company will not risk the chance of critical information falling into the wrong hands.
Orders will be taken and the information will be recorded into the company’s system, specifically the sub domain of the sales department. The team will therefore be able to view the order that are active and those that have been submitted. This will go a long way in helping the company come up with an effective sales strategy based on the analysis of the information regarding the quantity and value of their orders. The orders will be assigned specific numbers in the systems and this will be the reference number that will also appear on the fiscal receipt. In case of any problems with an order, the number can be used to track it to determine its problem or even its status. The system will also help in managing inventory in the sense that the products will be recorded based on the specific numbers and these numbers will determine those that leave the warehouse first, (Dumas, 2013). The first drinks to enter the warehouse will be the first one to leave when a sale is made.
The company will utilize the use of the internet and social media to enhance communication between employees. There are different types of platforms that can be used by the company for communication within the company. There will be groups on Facebook and Twitter that will be used a communication channel. There will also be an email platform that will be used for passing important information regarding meetings and those events that are taking place in the company. In addition to social media and the internet, the company will also use telephones to inform employees on urgent issues. With regards to the customers, the company will develop a customer care department that will be charged with communicating and handling employee issues regarding the product, (Nieuwenhuizen, Rossouw, & Badenhorst, 2008).
Management Plan
The company will be a middle level company and the most effective management structure will be the functional organizational structure. This is best structure for the company because it will divide the company into different departments that that have different functions that are aimed at achieving the goals and objectives of the organization. This structure will ensure that the company is able to focus on getting the targeted market, (Nieuwenhuizen, Rossouw & Badenhorst, 2008). In all the department, each employee reports to the employee who is above him or her. For instance, if the production process has a problem such as an issue of replacement of one of the machines, there will be a supervisor who will be reporting to the production manager, the production manager will then be able to reach out to the Accounting and Purchasing department. The production manager will give a proposal the accounting office and the accounting office will forward the reviewed proposal to the vice president for approval.
The management style that will be used by the company is the affiliate management style. This is a style that will see it through that the organization is able to maintain harmony among the employee from the top level management to the lowest level employees. The style is based on the people first, task second idea and this will ensure that conflict and avoided and managed effectively in the organization. The style will motivate the employees by making them happy and as a result they will develop job satisfaction.
Ethics and Social Responsibility Plan
Rage Company is determined to become a good corporate citizen by not only offering the best quality product to the customers but also caring for the employees, environment as well as the community in the vicinity of the manufacturing plant. To begin with, the company will be a good corporate citizen by making sure that it offers job opportunities to the citizens of the United States. As stated earlier, the company will be employing 200 employees and these will include a variety of employees from different fields ranging from janitors to top executive management. The company will see it through that it offers equal employment opportunities to the potential employees who will be applying for the various position that will require to be filled so as to ensure that the company is able to run its operations smoothly and effetely.
Being a god corporate citizen, first and foremost the company will ensure that it pays its taxes on time by filling its returns. Also the company will adhere to the laws and regulations governing the nonalcoholic industry. The laws governing the operations of the company are stipulated by organizations such as the FDA which is responsible for guaranteeing the quality and safety of the foods being processed by manufacturers in the United States. The FDA has set certain standards that all manufactures have to adhere to and the company will ensure that it is up to date with the requirements so as to make sure that it does not violates any of the stipulated laws and regulations, (Stutely, 2002). This is part of the company’s commitment to ensure that the quality of the energy drink is undisputed and therefore offer customers maximum benefits. The company will also adhere to the local laws such as municipal laws that govern the way the company disposes of its waste materials from the manufacturing plant.
The company will also strive to treat its employees fairly and honestly. The company will be built on a foundation of fairness and equality and this will ensure that the company shows appreciation as well as respect to its employees. Fairness means that the company will see it through that there are no income disparities among employees who are in the same job level undertaking the same duties and responsibilities. The will therefore ensure that both genders, male and female, receive equal treatment with regard to compensations and job duties and responsibilities. This is what is what is referred to a fairness. Also fairness means that an employee who is in the same level with other employees and has the same duties and responsibilities but have more educations qualifications and experience, then this individual, regardless of their gender, race or nationality is entitled to a higher remuneration, (Rostker, Hix & Wilson, 2007) This an example of how the company will be demonstrating fairness among the employees.
The company is also focused on recruiting not only a creative and competent staff but also one that is diversified with no elements of discrimination. The recruitment process will be in accordance with the stipulations of the Equal Employment Opportunity Act, 1967. This therefore means that individual will be selected based on their qualifications, skills and experience rather than their characteristics. This means that the selection process will be free of discrimination of any kind, (Rostker, Hix and Wilson). Moreover, the Human Resource will also be charged with the task of ensuring that there is no violation of the above mentioned laws even after the employees have been accepted for employment in the company. This will see it through that the company maintains happy and conflict free employees who are not only efficient but also productive for the better good of the organization as a whole.
The goal of the company is not a social venture because the primary goal of the company is not to achieve a social or environmental goal. The primary aim of the company is to achieve a healthy and working nation. Rage energy drink is packed with the ingredients that are aimed at giving customers both a great taste as well as energy and good health as a bonus. It is only through achieving this goal that the company can be able to achieve its goals too. For the company to achieve its goals to, the customers have to be happy and for the customer to be happy, it all boils down producing an energy drink that meets the specific needs of the customers. However, the fact that the company is not targeting a social or environmental goal does not meant that the company is not environmental conscious, (Young, 2007). The company is also targeting to ensure that the environment remain the same or even better than it was before.
As a beverage company, there are a number of environmental effects that might result from the manufacturing process. First and foremost, the company is bound to almost as much waste water as that that it takes in. The water is used for various processes within the plant and by the time it gets out as waste water it is contaminated by the various chemicals used in the plant as cleaning agents. There are also concerns regarding the metallic cans that will be used for packing the energy drink. It is possible that some customers may not be environmental conscious and may therefore the metal cans carelessly in the environment. To deal with the water pollution, the company will ensure that it used an enhanced recycling technique which will see it through that company does not disposed of harmful waste water but recycles is and reuses it. To deal with the plastic cans, the company will included warning messages or sighs on the cans so as to inform the user on the most effective way disposing of the metal cans.
There are numerous advantages that are associated with the consumption of Rage Energy Drink. This is because the ingredients of the drinks have been tested thoroughly the chemist and biologist of the company to ascertain the benefits to the users. To begin with caffeine which is one of the major ingredient of Rage Energy drink increases the short time memory of the users as well are increase concentration and reduce and fatigue. This therefore means that the drink will greatly benefit individuals who love it in the field as well as those who love being in the office working for long hours and they want maximum attention.
One of the major health concerns about the energy drink is that facing almost all the players in the energy drink sectors. This is the fact that higher caffeine levels may cause negative side effects to the individual consuming the product. These effects include one getting tired after the effect of the drink wear from their blood stream. To reduce this effect, the company will ensure that the drink has the effective sugar quantity that does not interfere with the blood sugar of the users. To ensure that he positive claims are true, the company will offer samples for the drinks during sponsoring events and will be a first hand show of the ability of the energy drink.
As it was covered in the marketing section, the energy drink will only be targeting a particular group of individuals and these are the young adults and youths who are still in colleges and high school. The consumption of the product by children of pregnant women may affect them adversely. Therefore the company will see it through that the targeted market is reached directly through online advertising and event sponsoring so as to ensure that the product only reaches the targeting customers. The advertisement will be putting out a clear message about the appropriate age for the consumption of the drink even though it is not an alcoholic drink.
