1. Describe the difference between chance and assignable causes.

Assignable causes entails one or a few individual causes while chance consists of a number of individual causes. Assignable causes can be eluded, but chance cannot. Chance and the gamble can be taken out of the equation by changing the existing process while assignable causes are found in the process itself. As stated in our textbook, “chance, or common causes are small ran- dom changes in the process that cannot be avoided. These small differences are due to the inherent variation present in all processes. They consistently affect the process and its performance day after day, every day. Variation of this type is only removable by making a change in the existing process. Removing chance causes from a system usually involves management intervention. Assignable causes, on the other hand, are variations in the process that can be identified as having a specific cause. Assignable causes are causes that are not part of the process on a regular basis. This type of variation arises because of specific circumstances. It is these circumstances that the quality assurance analyst seeks to find”(Summer, 2010).

2. How would you use variation to manage a group of people? Why should a manager be aware of assignable and chance causes?

You could use variation to manage a group of people because by figuring out and understanding variation it causes results in better decisions. Variation show how things are different and what needs to be changed in order for things to work. As stated in our textbook, “They realize that management intervention will be necessary to improve production at previous operation and produce shafts with less variation” (Summer, 2010). When managing a group of people it is important to find out whether or not they are being affected by chance or assignable causes. The manager must find out if the cause affects the whole group or a single member.
