Philosophy Final Paper (30%)
I have decided that for your final-exam essay I would like you to write on what you feel you have learned from reading Plato's Republic. Have you learned anything about the nature of justice? Have you learned anything about what sort of life would make you happy? Have you learned anything about what it means to know something? Have you learned anything about how we might improve our own state politically? These are just a few of the possible angles you can take on answering this question. Do not try to argue more than one point, though. Even if you feel you have learned several things from the Republic, pick the one you think is most important and argue for that.
This essay is going to be exactly like the ones you have already done. It should be approximately 500 words and should have intro, background, argument, and conclusion sections. You will NOT get points for cramming in a lot of extraneous information about the Republic. Don NOT put anything in your paper that you do not absolutely HAVE to have. I want nice, streamlined arguments that make their points, clearly and persuasively. Make sure you get all the background you need to have, however, given that you have to assume that your reader has not read the Republic. Summarize the material you are going to need to refer to in your argument and make that summary the background section. Do not put your own views in the background. Just give Plato's/Socrates' views there. Also, don't neglect the conclusion, make sure it hooks up with the introduction. If you mention the Republic in the introduction (which you WILL do), then you are going to need to mention it in the conclusion as well.
Review the paper-writing guidelines that I attached to Week 11 and watch AGAIN the video on writing papers that is on my website. These papers should not be difficult. If you find writing your paper is difficult, then my guess is that that is because you are not taking the proper approach.
