Instructor: Bruno Lee EV-15.103 [email protected] Office hours: Mondays / Tuesday, 14:00-16:00 or by appointment ______________________________________________________________________ Project Comprehend, summarize, and recreate the assigned Solar Decathlon project (selected from one of the 2013 projects: http://www.solardecathlon.gov/past/2013/teams.html). Learning objectives: 1. Comprehend the design and gather information through studying the plans
(“Construction Drawings”) and document (“Project Manual”) for your assigned project.
2. Organize the gathered information and present the design in a way that is appropriate for its purpose as defined in this project description.
The project is divided into two parts. Part 1: Presentation of a technology, and Part 2: Presentation of the construction drawings. Note: This is a team project of 5 students (minimum 4 students). All team members must equally contribute to the project and share equal responsibility for the quality of work (see Individual Grading Scheme). If this is not the case, the students must inform the course instructor before the submission of the final report. Part 1: Presentation of a technology The “Project Manual” presented certain technologies that each of the Solar Decathlon teams has selected to address certain environmental or energy issues. Base on the many technologies presented, your team has to select a technology that is of interest to you.
1. Gather information (can be from sources other than the “Project Manual”) and describe the background of the technology, the advantages of applying such technology, the application, and the limitation.
2. Demonstrate your understanding of the technology by highlighting its impact on the environment and/or energy landscape.
3. Identify knowledge gap(s) in designing and applying such a technology in terms of environmental impact with reference to other systems (e.g. structural, HVAC, building envelope … etc.), in which additional data (please describe) might be required.
4. Present the technology in an appropriate graphical format (e.g. a series of illustration to demonstrate the operation of the technology, a movie of the technology in action … etc.).
Part 2: Presentation of construction drawings A complete project involves drawings covering aspects in architecture, structural, HVAC, building envelope. Based on information gathered from both the “Construction Drawings” and “Project Manual”, prepare the following set of drawings / rendering for your final report in Revit: Floor Plan G/F only, show windows and doors with frames and sash,
show stairs if any. Elevation Elevations should display the main entrance (could be in S, E,
W, N facade). Proper representation of windows and doors. Vertical dimensioning. Indicate major materials.
Section Section should pass through the Living room and Bedroom, and cover the whole building. Indicate the ground level, floor number(s), and dimension.
Note: draw proper line width to specify thickness
Detailed Wall Section Showing wall layers, connections with roof and ceiling, must show a wall section that includes glazing (a tall piece can be shown with a discontinue // mark to allow more details to be shown with proper scale). Show window frame and connection details.
Structural Plan Pick either floor OR roof / ceiling, where ducts or pipes are passing through (shown on mechanical plan). Show structural components if any -- joists, beams, slab, columns, foundation walls, etc. Show opening.
Mechanical Plan Show and name all HVAC system components, plumbing system components. Duct and/or pipe work. Names of all rooms.
3D Rendering Rendering of the house (outside). Pick a view that best shows the characteristics / features of the house
General information: • Print on 11”x 17” • Use of appropriate scale and print to scale • All drawings must have complete title block and border • All drawings must have sufficient dimensioning • Each drawing must have title • Each drawing is numbered, e.g. A1, M1 … • Indicate section on plan • Only black lines (no grey lines) • Complete legend if required • Complete cover page Project submission and deadlines: In all your submissions, indicate your assigned team number, the team members (name and ID) and the project. One submission per team. • Proposal (2%, due Oct 5, submission to Moodle):
Provide a brief write-up of Part 1, task 1 and 2. Describe (only describe) how you would perform task 4 in your final report. 1 to 2 pages.
• Floor Plan (5%, due Nov 2, submission to Moodle + printout):
To be completed in AutoCAD. • Final Report (23%, due Dec 8, submission to Moodle + printout):
Part 1: Complete task 1 to task 4. No more than 8 pages for the descriptive part plus additional pages for Task 4 (animation or movie can be submitted as a separate file to Moodle, please indicate clearly your method of delivery in your report). Part 2: To be completed in Revit (submit file to Moodle). Printout to be submitted in class. You are encouraged to complete your project as much as possible during tutorial and discuss with the tutors. Note: one submission per team by any team member
Individual Grading Scheme: As mentioned, we expect all team members equally contribute to the project and share same responsibility for the quality of work. However, some students might contribute more than others. An input has been created in Moodle to rank the contribution of your fellow teammates in the following format (including yourself):
• Student 1 (name), • Student 2 (name), Student 3 (name), Student 4 (name), • Student 5 (name)
Ranking from the most contribution to the least. Names on the same line mean equal ranking. Each team member must submit his/her own ranking.
