GEOG 106 Fall 2015: Final Exam

Read these BEFORE you proceed further:

 Your responses are due before 1:50 pm on Wednesday, December 9th o You may choose to upload the document via the Moodle course page

 Make sure that your responses to all the questions are in the same document  Do not submit a document each for the questions

o Or, bring the print version to my office (HSS 219)  Or give it to a responsible person in the Social Science Division office.

 This is an open-book (well, open-readings), open-notes test. o There is always a chance that you might have to integrate your understanding of

ideas across the contents of more than one week.

 Thou SHALL NOT consult with anybody o Violating this will result in severe penalties for the offenders.

 A well-crafted answer (per question) may be articulated in about 500 words

 In developing your answers: o Keep in mind the feedback that I provided in class after the Midterm exam o Bring in appropriate keywords/concepts, and evidence from the readings

 When discussing keywords/concepts, do not merely copy/paste them from websites; explain your understanding of those ideas in your own words.

o Provide logical arguments that carefully examine the pros and the cons  DO NOT merely provide your reflective opinions

 Avoid rhetorical statements and metaphors

 Answers should be word-processed and double-spaced

 Pay attention to the mechanics of writing o Grammar, spell-check, etc.

1. Discuss whether location is more or less important in the primary sector activities in comparison

with the tertiary sector activities.

2. Is migration always beneficial to the countries from which people emigrate and to those to which they immigrate?

3. The market system operates via prices. Discuss how through prices a finite resource like crude oil will never really be exhausted, which will then make that resource seem infinite.

4. It appears that Kenyans and Colombians earning money via flower exports is consistent with the “I, Pencil” story. These flowers are sold across the US at stores like Safeway, which then jeopardizes the local “mom and pop” florists’ revenues. Is such a negative impact on local florists also consistent with the “I, Pencil” story?
