A Supercomputer located in 4th floor of building requires to be kept at low temperature to ovoid overheating. A water cooled chiller system is implemented for this purpose. The following chart represents the architecture of the piping system.

Figure 1: Schematic representation of the water chiller piping system

Part 1: Analyze the performance and the specifications of the Centrifugal Water Chiller?

Find and select catalog for any Centrifugal Water Chiller with cooling load between 1500 to 3000 tons of refrigeration. Read the catalog and write the required specifications in the excel sheet. You may find the specifications in different catalogs or websites; you must write all of these references in the excel sheet. The empty sheet you can find it in the Power Campus.

· Fill the specifications in the excel sheet and submit it as softcopy and hardcopy.

· Submit the catalog as softcopy, no need to print it. Also, save any related web pages.

· The softcopy submission will be in the class via USB memory.

Part 2: Selection of pump

The pump used in the figure 1 delivers a flowrate of 15 GPM.

· Assume that the head pressure loss inside the water chiller is 2m

· The 10m pipe through the height of the building is formed by joining 3 pipes of 3m and 1m pipe.

· All pipes have the same diameter, D=35mm

· All elbows are 90o and they have a path radius R=20mm

1. List the different components (joints, pipe, valves…) used in this piping system.

2. Calculate the flowrate in the pipe after the first T-junction.

Use the calculation head pressure losses excel sheet uploaded on PowerCampus to calculate how much head pressure is need by the pump.
