American Culture in China

In the world’s history, we can find two leaders of the world: Spain and the British Empire. They are the same as American culture has crossed cultures worldwide and it is frequently hard to distinguish where one commences and the other ends. Three articles have talked about the American culture’s globalization. Brendon O’Connor, the author who writes “Bored with USA?” ,uses the sarcastic tone to tell the readers that the worldwide American culture has advantages and disadvantages, and we both love and hate the American culture, but at the same time, other countries should funding the local culture and be more creativity. In another article, “In 2,000 Years, Will the World Remember Disney or Plato?”, wrote by Mark Rice-Oxley, also told us American culture is superpower today, but sometimes it created the backlash, and it will be danger for other cultures. In “Exporting the Wrong Picture”, wrote by Martha Bayles, used a history event to show the popular American culture in the world today, and we should notice the active and negative influence made by the popular culture. The American culture has changed the Chinese culture to a negative extent, and it can be seen in the movies, food, and music.

In Chinese theaters, there are many movies screened for few days, and there are at least two or three films are made in Hollywood. “Local industries are truly at risk of extinction because of U.S. oligopolies, such as Hollywood.”(Rice-Oxley P164) Rice-Oxley told that even European Union tried to save their film market, but the Hollywood is still control the whole film market. This is the case in China. Many young Chinese watch a lot of American movies. People in China who do not watch American films are considered outdated. When I went back to my country, I found that American culture becomes a part of Chinese entertainment. I met many old friends in the cinema to watch a movie, and most of the films we saw was from Hollywood. In addition, the Hollywood movies become the younger Chinese fashion. As Rice-Oxley said “And Chinese young people are becoming more captivated by American football and basketball, some even daubing the names of NBA stars on their school sweatsuits.”(164). Many Chinese students are also fever in Hollywood films, they buy a lot of DVDs about Hollywood movies even use their living cost. However, these American entertainments give some bad influence to younger Chinese. I believe with what Bayles said “But America is also exporting more than enough depictions of profanity, nudity, violence and criminal activity to violate norms of propriety still horned in much of the world”(175). They imitate the violent behavior or language in the films, and they stay up late in order to watch the first run of the Hollywood film. American culture affect not only their grades, but also have an adverse affection on their health.

In the past, Chinese people always ate noodles or rice, and the elder people hardly ate snacks. “In 1990, when McDonalds was first introduced to China, fast food restaurants from western countries were not widely accepted in China. In fact, many Chinese had never heard about the typical menu such as French fries and Hamburg that were offered in fast food restaurants”(Chen P1). I agree with Chen. Today, an American meal is part of a Chinese meal. People can see McDonald or KFC everywhere, even in Chinese countryside. The fast food has pushed Chinese economy in some ways, because it is convenient and may be tasty for some people. Nevertheless, some people named fast food as “McDomination”, because fast food control many food market, and it also made the weakness.(Rice-Oxley P164). “Children in Chinese families were not allowed to eat many snacks and fried food due to the high calories and oncogenes found in fried food.”(P2) says Chen. “After McDonalds stepped into sight, most rules about Chinese traditional eating patterns that encourage Chinese to eat less high calorie food have been eroded gradually.” The same as Chen said, when I was a child, my parents didn't allowed me to eat more snacks per day. Many Chinese children are like eating fast food very much, so the obesity in younger Chinese are increasing today. This fast food culture also let many local people get the chance to make money. They imitate the McDonald to make the fast food like French fries, fried chicken, but some of they didn't trained and some of they didn't get the safe food material, so it cause many health problem in China.

American music also influence the loss of Chinese traditional music. Chinese used to pride of our traditional music style, its soft and classical, for example, the “the moon over a fountain”, the traditional music played by erhu, let listeners feel peaceful and quite. However today, hip-hop or American songs are played everywhere, in the restaurant; in the book store; or in the school. People think hip-hop is the popular style, they do not want to be out of the style. Even many younger Chinese go to the hip-hop class instead of the class in the school. “In response to the New York Times's assertion that “many students and working-class Chinese” are rhyming about the “bitterness that comes with realizing---[they are] left out of China's economic boom." blogger Brendan O'Kane said: “This is horseshit. The angry Chinese rap I've heard is generalized teenage angst with no attempt at social commentary. The most “daring” rap I've heard is predicated on schoolboy puns about smoking pot."(http://factsanddetails.com/china/cat7/sub41/item1627.html) Hip-hop affect many younger Chinese, they learn the bad words in the music, and they become violence by watching the MV; also, they forget the Chinese traditional music, or they have never heard about it.

All in all, the American culture has its both negative and positive impacts to the Chinese culture. It brings a lot of wonderful movies for the world, but it also give negative affection to the Youngers. The fast food, on the one hand, let people’s life become convenient, and let economy become better; on another hand, makes lots of health problems. The hip-hop is the fashion style, so many people chasing it, whereas we should not forget our traditional culture. “We love and loathe the American culture”(162) America being the dominating country in the world, it has its influence in many countries across the world and china does not exclude itself from this list. I have great agreement with Bayles that she said American should export their active part instead of teaching the world the negative culture. The American culture has both its negative and positive influences on the Chinese culture, but one thing is clear, we should keep our own culture and never forget it, we should always remember our own music’s peaceful feeling; we should always know that we also have many great local firms; we should know that Chinese food is more suitable for us.
