Title: Reasons for implementing Gun Control regulations
Guiding question: What are the reasons why gun control be implemented in America? Reconsideration of gun control laws in America has been a hot subject of discussion in the government. America is one of the nations with the least amount of regulations on guns. This is because America is known for its patriotic citizens, and the right to bear arms is written in the constitution. We need more legal regulations in order to prevent unnecessary deaths and injuries caused by increased handling of guns by unauthorized people.
A major concern is that guns are too easy to obtain because America does not have strict and enough background checks. This is a problem because citizens easily get weapons required for perpetrate crimes. For instance, some gangs are formed in different parts of America, and you find that each in these gangs has access to guns (Kleck 67). This implies that the gun owners can easily access guns from gun sellers through the black market. The availability of the guns to the citizens should point of control. The issue of the increased gangs in the american neighbor hoods is related to the availability of guns from gun sellers which is due to lack of regulations from the gorvenment (Kleck 67).
Another consequence of increased accessibility of guns is that unintentional deaths can be caused by both the children and the adults because of gun accessibility. The number of the unintentional killings has been reported to increase over the last few years by the civilians as a result of gun ownership. The fact that such gang members have access to dangerous firearms makes their children and family members vulnerable. Sometimes, the guns might just accidentally go off as a result of poor handling and therefore result to casualties that are unaccounted for. In other situations, the children will try to use the weapon out of curiosity and do what the parent does and without the knowledge. Their naivety will even see them use the guns as toys and in the process cause death as they shoot innocently or accidentally (Kleck 34). This is a problem because these deaths are preventable by making guns less accessible to children with child access prevention laws that hold parents legally responsible for improper storage of guns. Another consequence of the increased gun handling is the ease with which mass massacres are carried out. The rates of mass shooting in the United States as well as to the rest of the world are linked to the possession of the handguns by the mass shooters. Placing bans on the hand guns will assist in reducing the cases of accidental shootings.
The reasons why guns are easily available to civilians are because the guns are easily concealable.it is difficult to detect the people who are in possessions of the guns. Because these weapons are easily concealable, they are the weapons of choice to criminals to perpetrate the different majority of the crimes such as robbery with violence, murder as well as suicide. The availability of the guns in the black market has contributed to the increased rates of crime as well as the increases number of casualties that occur as a result of gun mishandling (Spitzer 106). Legal ownership of guns has been misused with more individuals acquiring guns illegally from the black market.
Several debates have arisen on the issue of the need to exercise gun control. There have been divisions on whether or not to exercise gun control. The second amendment in the US constitution is controversial on the need to regulate the militia and the right of the citizens to have access to bear arms. It is not clear on the issue of bearing of arms by the civilians. Proper interpretation of the clause on the handling of firearms should be done to make sure clarity of the matter. When the clause is properly interpreted, then it would be easier to enact the control over the hand guns (Lott 78).
Banning of the guns will not be the sole solution to the problems of insecurity. Several laws should be enacted on the availability and the usage of the hand guns. Additionally, strict measures should be put in place to make sure that citizens do not have easy access to guns. Regarding this issue, the licensing of the hand guns should be strict to make the availability of the guns difficult. Statistics show that the percentage of the murders committed using the hand guns is significantly larger than murders committed using other weapons (Spitzer 94).
As a measure of implementing gun control, people living with those who are authorized to have ownership of the guns must be equipped and have the knowledge of how to protect themselves from potential injury or death from firearms. They have to learn what they ought to do in a case where they encounter or get caught up in an incident involving guns. This way, knowing the dos and the don’ts, they will be able to protect themselves, stay safe and avoid accidental injuries. Parents should also educate their children the tactics and the dangers such things bring.
Another measure of effecting control on the hand guns is the use of other effective personal defense weapons that can be used and are less likely to cause deaths as compared to the handguns. Some of these weapons include Tasers, pepper spray, wildfire pepper spray, mace sprays, knives, pet leash, and palm stick among others. Most of these weapons are self-defense weapons that help people protect themselves and limit the use of guns or purchase of firearms for safety (Duggan 202). One’s safety or a family’s safety is always the priority for many people hence the need for these weapons that are less dangerous.
In conclusion, although it is evident that guns are supposed to enhance personal security, the availability of the guns has resulted to alarming rates of insecurity (Lott 64). The consequence of the increased handling of guns by civilians is the elevated number of homicides. Hand gun ownership is related to the number of the homicides recorded. It is the general notion that if civilians have access to the guns they are more likely to cause murders than when they do not have access to guns. In addition to more murders, suicides are also implication of the increased handling of the guns. Therefore it is in the concern of both the public and the government to support the gun control agendas to ensure safety of the citizens.
