Dear Students of 1341F,
A few things to keep in mind when writing and/or editing your essay:
Oedipus wants to send for "the shepherd" (line 927) but Jocasta is not so sure "Why so urgent?" (line 928).
Jocasta can't wait to tell Oedipus that Polybus (his "father") is dead.
Oedipus learns that he was adopted(!) ("You were a gift.../from my hands." (lines 1118, 1119, 1120). Jocasta remains (significantly?) silent.
Jocasta, when she learns the truth, she hangs herself.
Oedipus blinds himself.
Oedipus, to the embarrassment of the Chorus, shows himself, proclaiming that he is the the worst sinner and the most hated of the gods--all of which sounds rather boastful!!!!
As was mentioned in class, he hasn't learned a thing.
(But Creon and the Chorus HAVE learned something. The curse has been removed and the city will be restored to its former stability. BUT at what cost!!??
