Conducting/Analyzing Interview

Introduction

As a prerequisite to writing my final paper, I interviewed Professor Shuhong Li, who is an Associate Professor of Arts Administration and Coordinator of Internships in the School of Music at Shaoguan University, China. This interview was conducted through Wechat (a free messaging and calling app that allows people to easily connect with others across countries), and was recorded predominantly on handwritten notes because of Professor Li prefers me to take written notes only.

Life History

Professor Li was born in Hunan, China. She previously earned the Master of Arts Administration degree from Xinghai Conservatory of Music in Guangzhou, Guangdong and the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Hunan Normal University in Changsha, Hunan. After graduating she became associate professor at Shaoguan University, she develops curriculum, teaches classes, and coordinate student during their internship in Arts Administration Program. In the meantime, she also serves as lecturer to undergraduate students in Arts Administration in the Xinghai Conservatory of Music. It’s worth mentioning that she is an active presence in the local arts organizations and serves as advisor on the Huazhiguan Cultural and Artistic Center and Shaoguan Theatre. This is exactly the reason led she to become the internship coordinator at Shaoguan University. She has always been related to these arts organizations and set up a good relationship of cooperation with them. With these partnerships, can provide internships for the students of Arts Administration Program which can help students after graduation in a relatively short period of time for arts administration work.

Professor Li told me that when she first arrive Shaoguan University, the development of internship of Arts Administration Program are not very good. The period of internship is too short causes students did not learn enough from the actual practice. Certainly, Arts Administration Program development is an important reason too. Because of Arts Administration is a new speciality in Shaoguan University at that time. There is a lot of aspects of Arts Administration Program isn’t perfect and there is still plenty of room for improvement.

Details of Experience

According to Professor Li, students will have to complete ten credits internship in the last semester and there is no other course have to take during that semester. For each credit hour of internship taken, students must complete 48 clock hours of work. Before to do an internship, students should complete required arts administration coursework in the previous semesters. It is very important that students have a good understanding of arts administration this major before they get into practical work. After internship, students need to submit an internship reflection paper that demonstrate their learning experiences to her to evaluate the quality of their internship.

For the process of internship, Professor Li told me that in the first place her duty is update and maintain the informational items for students. Because of she has always been related to the local arts organizations and set up a good relationship of cooperation with them, these arts organizations which can provide internships for students. She would post the internships descriptions via email to students and also put up posters on the bulletin boards. When students discovered there is a job that suit them, they need to contact Professor Li for the employment information, paperwork and authorization so that they can start the internship.

During the period of internship, Professor Li continuously care about student work and development, check their progress, offer feedback, and make sure they are on track to produce a successful internship. If problems occur, Professor Li need to resolve those problems in time and timely report the unusual conditions to school and parents. After graduation internship, Professor Li seriously sum up the internship to school and assess the students’ achievement with employers depending on students’ performance and reflection paper.

Reflections on Meaning

When I asked Profess Li what does it mean to her to be an internship director at Shaoguan University, she said she felt very honored to be this position and there are several reasons: first, helping students gain actual experience can explore their careers and develop skills that employers require. In this point, it is a valuable contribution to students and school even society. Second, with China’s burgeoning economy development, people develop higher needs for the diversity of arts administration. Internship Program can make Arts Administration Program develop into a ripe professional discipline. Last but not least, as always she build partnerships with local arts organizations that can provide internships for students is also a way that she thinks can improve her social contact ability. Act as a liaison between the students, Shaoguan University and the internship providers, Professor Li valued this job and believe that it can help her obtain spiritual sublimation and self-perfection.

Advice

After I told Professor Li that the purpose of my final paper will be to develop an internship with an existing Arts Administration Program at a college in Guangdong, China and hoping that she can give me some advice about how to develop such a program, Professor Li suggested me that first go to contact the administrator of the Arts Administration Program and talk about how an internship can benefit the students and the development of the program, make him/her realize the importance of an internship as possible so that the Internship Program can be further develop. Next find out which arts organizations can provide internship to students and contact these arts organizations for further development of the internship. It is very crucial that convince the arts organizations host an internship would benefit them a lot. Third, raise the awareness of the students about the importance of an internship. An internship is a period of training, students through an internship can learning by doing that can not learn from the courses.

Professor Li gave me very good directions, her words made me realize that find out arts organizations that can provide internships for students perhaps the most vital step of my final paper. As long as there are arts organizations that can provide internships for students, it is easy to convince the administrator to do the internship program, after all internships are a win-win situation for the college and students. With internships, students would have a better job prospects and can make the employment rate of the college high.

Professor Li also gave me some advice about how to bulid relationship with arts organizations. An internship program can provide many benefits to their organization such as students can bring new technologies and ideas from the classroom into their organization, an early start on training their future employees, significant low wage or even voluntary for the students’ work. Internships also are win-win situation for organization and students.

Conclusion

In general, I expect that this interview will really help me write my paper, specifically in the parts of Professor Li’s valuable experiences. I realize that how the internship program at Shaoguan University is structured from beginning to end and the process Professor Li go through in placing and arranging internships, which provide my brain blueprint about my proposed internship program. Moreover, Professor Li’s advice was able to point me towards right direction to my final paper, namely identify my audiences: administrator and arts organizations. Both of two play an important role in my proposed program. Figure out the audiences can make my paper in the right direction.

One other aspect of the interview I wanted to note was that throughout the entire thing, I did not ask Professor Li are there complains from the students concerning her implementation of internship program. If I could do the interview over again, I would definitely ask her the inadequate aspects of the internship program. Generally speaking, in some way the internship program has its advantages and disadvantages that I need to recognize so that I can better understand what I am doing and what to do.
