Massacre in Mexico
Mexico was experiencing the birth of a new movement of students. However, the movement was short lived, ten days before the opening of summer Olympics in the city of Mexico. Military troops and police officers shot into the crowd of students who were unarmed. Dozens of demonstrators fled in terror as tanks bulldozed over the Tlatelolco plaza. At the time, student’s movements were coming out all over the world with Mexico being no exception. Just like majority of the countries in those years, Mexico had produced vivacious middle class that enjoyed a life of quality that was unimaginable in the prior decades. These children of the revolution in Mexico who were now living in comfort were for the very first time capable of sending their children to university in exceptional numbers.
The student’s movement started from a street fight among high school students after a football match. The students faced the riot police of Mexico City who were sent there to end the scuffle. It took hours of student resistance when the army was called to clear the violence. This siege ended sadly after the army boomed in a preparatory school and killed some students. Students in nature expect that whatever they ask for should be granted unto them and this case was no different. The students wanted the government to give in to their demands but the president made it clear to them that no more unrest will be tolerated.
I think that the massacre had some kind of political influence. New information is cropping up through official documents releases that suggest that the presidential guard which is a branch of the military had posted snipers in the surroundings of the building on the day that the massacre took place. This would have been used to create the notion that the troops that were posted around the building were being shot by student snipers and then they would open fire while it was the government snipers who were shooting.
