Persuasive Speech Instructions
Persuasive Speech: The persuasive speech appeals to an audience’s attitudes, beliefs, and values. It attempts to sway listeners to the speaker’s point of view. Simply put, advocate for change. Tell us about an issue that we need to take a different approach on. Challenge a commonly held point of view and change our mind about your selected topic. Your position should be one that has substantial opposition in the general population. Review the persuasive speaking chapter for more assistance in the development of your speech.
Characteristics of an effective persuasive speech:
· Sense of urgency for change using the words “should” or “must”
· Strong evidence to support your claims
· Serious problem defined and clear solution provided
· Addresses major counter arguments to what you are proposing
· Passionate call to action
· Avoids logical fallacies
Requirements:
· You must have a clear introduction, body and conclusion
· You must have a clear thesis statement
· You must cite 2 credible sources in your outline and in your speech
· Full sentence outline is due on the day that you speak
· Functional visual aid of your choice
· Limit text to brief phrases or important main ideas
· Be creative, use pictures or short (15 seconds or less) video
· Be sure to test compatibility on a basic school computer so that there are no technical difficulties on your speech day.
During Speech Days:
· You must provide a typed outline with grading rubric #1 stapled to the back of your outline on the day that you speak
· If you come in late, do not interrupt other student speeches by walking straight in. Look through the window first. If there is a speech, wait until the end of applause to walk into class.
· Be respectful and utilize active listening, I will notice any cell phone use and ask you to leave if necessary
· Be prepared to give positive feedback to other speakers
