writing a resume
Date: XX/XX/XXXX
To: BUAD 201 Students
From: Your Professor
Subject: Career Package
Purpose: This assignment will prepare you to apply for an internship or, if you choose, for a job in your area of expertise. You will have an attractive, persuasive résumé that you can build upon and individualize. You will learn to target/tailor your application to available positions, to assess and package your skills effectively, and to create a professional application package.
Your Task:
. Find an internship listing that most closely applies to your chosen field and for which you are or will be qualified in the near future. Submit a clean copy of this internship announcement with your résumé and the cover letter.
Alternative : Find and print out a job announcement that you have found on LinkedIn that you are qualified for.
Do a little research: If appropriate, call the company and find out the name of the liaison person handling internships/job applications. After all, you don’t want to send out a generic “To Whom It May Concern” letter but a customized, engaging piece of personal advertising. Seek out information about the company to ensure a proper fit. Work carefully on tailoring/targeting your cover letter: You will need to address the needs of the employer (expressed in the job description) by tying them to your specific skills. A cover letter is an important screening tool for recruiters. If it is full or errors or otherwise flawed, your résumé may not even be read!
The Career Package assignment will consist of a
· job announcement for a business internship or entry level position
· cover letter
· traditional print-based résumé
· LinkedIn Profile
The job announcement is the description of the job or internship. You only need to submit a copy of the job posting (announcement). Your cover letter and résumé need to focus on this opportunity (5 points).
The résumé must be completed using the Résumé Builder on the Career Center’s website (http://www.fullerton.edu/career/students/) or created in MSWord (40 points). Use the samples in the Guffey/Loewy book to guide you.
The cover letter must be composed using the recommendations in Chapter 15 and the resources provided by the Mihaylo and CSUF Career Centers. It needs to focus on the job announcement and your skills (40 points).
The LinkedIn profile must be created if you do not already have one, and revised if you do. Use the details on your résumé to create a detailed profile. Invite at least five people to join your network. Use LinkedIn tutorials if you need help. Save a copy of the first page only of your LinkedIn profile and submit with the other documents. This is the start of your personal brand and professional network (15 points).
