Homeless [ness] and children's education [capitalize titles]
Children and families living without permanent homes or long-term housing are faced with different challenges. The effect of homelessness is greatly felt by children since it affects their health and overall development. In America alone, 1.6 million children were homeless between 2006 and 2010. The numbers have gone higher since then due to unexpected financial challenges according to data provided by the National Centre on Family Homelessness (NCFH 16). [This source is not listed in the WC list.] More than half of those children were reported to be below the age of six. One of the major challenges of homelessness is on child education. [This statement is non sequitur: it neither summarizes what is above nor leads into what is below.]
Most homeless children and families either live in homes for the homeless or in temporary shelters on streets or abandoned houses. Therefore, they are exposed to damaged physical well-being. They live in environments characterised by poor sanitation, extreme weather conditions such as cold and high temperatures, which leaves them susceptible to medical problems (Kerri 3).[not in WC list] Homeless children, also lack access to proper medical care and face malnutrition due to unsafe cooking methods and poor eating habits. Due to such medical conditions, the homeless children end up missing school.
Homeless children are also faced with psychological and emotional issues. Due to the unstable nature of their living conditions, most are faced with depression. Most will result[ do you mean “resort to”? ] to abuse of drugs to cope with such situations. A big number of homeless children have been observed to develop a low IQ compared to their housed peers. [source of this fact?] It is also hard to access mental health Medicare for homeless children. Therefore, this depression is mostly transferred to school where they become violent and engaging in aggressive behaviour. [ The? Development in education is also delayed in most homeless children. Most preschoolers [do you mean “most homeless pre-schoolers?] have been observed to have a delay in language, social development and psychomotor development. Most homeless children also post poor academic results due to their nature of mobility. They change schools very often mostly in the middle of the year when learning is at its peak. Therefore, academic time is lost. It is estimated that homeless children and youths lose five months of learning due to absenteeism and frequent change of living premises (Ashley 2005).Wrong format: check MLA format for name. Various interventions can be undertaken to alleviate these effects of homelessness on the education of these children. One of the most important policy mechanisms that can be adopted is through poverty reduction. This can be done through providing the families with employment opportunities, increasing their minimum income and incentives such as tax credits. By lifting them out of poverty, the families can be able to afford finances needed to keep their children in school (Kerri 8). Check MLA formatting: last name. Never use the first name.
Another key intervention that can be undertaken is to provide these homeless families with housing. This housing should meet all the health and safety standards while at the same time affording them the freedom and security to move out during the day to go and seek employment while children go to school. With a stable home, the children will be in a position to stick to one school while will minimize absenteeism and mobility. The children can therefore focus on their academic progress without any major setbacks.
The problem of homelessness has had a big effect on school going[school-age] children. These include problems with health, psychological and emotional challenges[series comma here ] and education developmental challenges. This has contributed to homeless children lagging behind their housed peers in education. This problem can be arrested by undertaking interventions, which include raising their [ref? ] social capital and provision of housing [???]
