Designing and Developing a Database within the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology School
In one sense, database environment can be summarized as a collection and usage of data, which is made possible by a number of components. These components make up the database environment. They include people, procedures, hardware, software and data.
Designing and Developing a Database
Following are some of the recommendations I would like to propose to the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology School in an effort to design and develop a database using professional principles and standards. First, I would recommend that an adequate infrastructure of hardware systems be built to serve as a foundation. The hardware should be made up of the computers as well as computer peripherals where the data will be fed. Data will then be stored and processed in these computer hard disks. Hard disks can either be internal or external (Harrington, 2009).
Secondly, there should also be Software systems in place, which will be installed in the already acquired hardware. The software systems refer to the operating systems of the computer. They are the programs that are used in data application (Harrington, 2009). The software will be installed and run in the computers and hence data analysis will be done through the help of these programs.
Thirdly, the database environment should consist of people. People refer to all the persons who administer or use the system. They are the ones who feed the data into the computers, install the operating systems and process the data. People are actually the users of data that is being processed by the computers.
Fourthly, there ought to be procedures that will help in the running of these systems.
Procedures refer to the guidelines that are to be followed in the collection of data, feeding it to the computers and processing it. These guidelines are actually instructions that have to be followed in order to ensure that the process is done in the right way.
Finally, there should be presence of data. In fact, data itself is an important element of the database environment. Data refers to information that can be used for certain reasons. Data can be either raw or processed. Raw data is the data that has not be processed and refined (Stephens & Plew, 2001). It is data that is yet to be sorted and hence cannot be used for decision-making. Processed data is data that has been sorted and can be used for decision-making.
Problems and constraints
The database environment that I have highlighted above may face a number of problems that may hinder it from achieving its main objectives. Financial constraints happen to be the major problem. In fact, setting up a good database environment may need a lot of funds that may be unavailable (Harrington, 2009). Memory issues could also act as constraints.
Objectives of database environment
Database environment should meet the requirements of the user. The objective of database environment in this case is to provide management with a platform where they can analyze the working conditions within the organization.
Scope and boundaries
The database environment should offer solutions that will address all the current user issues. It should also ensure that its boundaries support the system and the memory issues.
List of data specifications
Employees data; the system should be able to capture all data regulating to the employees including their bio data.
Pay; it should also contain data relating to salaries and allowances paid to each of the employees.
Contract; finally the database should contain the contract details of all the employees.
In conclusion, I would like to summarize my proposed plan for designing and developing a Database within the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology School and encourage the board members of the school to consider the benefits that will be brought about by adopting such a database. In fact, the database will make it so easy for administrators, professors, parents, as well as students in accessing any information they want at the University.
