Category of special needs: Emotional Disorder
1. IDEA definition of this category:
IDEA defines this as a condition exhibiting one or more of the following characteristics over a long period of time and to a marked degree that adversely affects a child’s educational performance.
2. Other definitions (if applicable):
Others definitions as an inability to learn that cannot be explained by intellectual sensory or health factors. An inability to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers and teachers.
3. Possible causes and/or prevention:
No one knows why some people are emotional disturbed, but some determinants are genetics, brain disorder, and selection of food, stress, and family dynamic.
4. Characteristics of young children identified in this category:
Anxiety and problems coping, mood swings between overly high to hopelessness may take anger out on other people or even animals. May destroy or deface property. Distort, lie, and take things that do not belong to them. Children may not pay attention to rules that are set up for them.
5. How this category of special needs affects the development of young children:
A child who has emotional disorder is withdrawn for social emotional connection with others. Usually a bully or just the opposite an introvert who cannot make close friends. The child’s language development can be affected by this disorder when a child has trouble communicating their thoughts and feelings or understanding others.
6. A current issue and/or future trend related to this category:
Is to catch it early and to get help for children early in life that show symptoms of emotional disorder. By getting help from mentors and get a good education foundation that assist children to realize that their behavior is a cry for help and not to be ignored. To also help families that may keep the cycle of emotional disorders going on and on without getting help.
7. An insight you have gained from your reading and research:
AN insight I have gained is how children should be diagnosis early in life with an emotional disorder and not think that their behavior is normal. Children who may seem more moody or acts out a little more than others. Even children who seem not to have anything to say or play with others. I know as an early preschool teacher we are told that we are to help the child and the family to learn everything they need to know before they can start kindergarten. But I need to also be aware of that emotional disorders can start at the age before six. To be informed that it can happen at any time and to be on the watch for any symptoms.
8. A misconception about this category uncovered through your research -- or a misconception you held before your research -- and information to correct it:
Misconception of emotional disorder I have uncovered that I did not think could happen is that children with emotional disorders can start at birth. I was surprised that I also read about how emotional disorders are not a medical disease. I believe that by research we were proving that we can help to control emotional disorders that people have with medications and help through mental health services.
9. A concern, question, or reflection you have about this particular category:
I find this subject to be of the most importance in my work. I work with low income and over half of my families are divorced and children who do not seem to know where they belong. I have a few children this school year who seem to be having issues with their emotions. I have tried to figure out what outburst from one child and his anger towards the other children was. I have learned though reading about this issue that he has many of the characteristics of emotional disorder.
10. The resources you used for your research including a Web site or other online resource you recommend (can be more than one):
