Midterm Paper: Topic Questions
Due: Wednesday, August 26, 2015
Please complete the following prompt for your Midterm Paper and discuss in detail how they utilize at least three of the techniques covered in Chapters 1-5. The paper should be 3-4 pages typed (about 850 words), font 12, written in Times New Roman, and must have a title. 2-3 sentences on a third page will not be sufficient!
When writing this paper, you must have a clear thesis statement, or purpose to your essay. The body paragraphs should be well thought out and provide evidence to support your thesis. You must have both an introduction and a conclusion. Please make sure you remain focused and above all – do not provide plot summaries! I will have more than likely seen the film, and writing a summary is NOT the purpose of this assignment. It is your responsibility to describe scenes in detail and include the other production personnel who helped make this directors vision become a visual reality.
Paper Topic:
By definition, verisimilitude is when watching a movie the audience becomes convinced that the things on the screen are “really there” and those things could be just like that within its film world. Choose a specific film, or director, that incorporates this notion of verisimilitude and explain how the techniques covered in Chapters 1-5 aid in this approach. In this particular film, what elements and or scenes lend themselves to the concept of verisimilitude?
Secondly, genres are defined by sets of conventions—aspects of storytelling such as recurring themes and situations, setting, character types, and story formula, as well as aspects of presentation and visual style such as decor, lighting, and sound. Chapter 3 provides an overview of six major American film genres. Classify the genre of this film and explain if the film falls into one specific type or contain elements of multiple genres?
