Ethnographic Interview

Assignment goal: The goal of this project is allow students to develop a deeper understanding of another culture by utilizing one of the main anthropological research methods. The student is given a high degree of agency in identifying a culture or community they wish to study, deciding on a research question, and choosing a methodology that best serves their purposes. The exercise encourages independent thought and self-motivation and incorporates an element of experiential learning in order to facilitate knowledge production and retention within a minimally structured setting.

Description: This project is an opportunity to actually work as an anthropologist, learning more about a particular group of people. The student will first pick a culture or community he/she would like to work with. The only limitations are that the student must NOT be a member of the selected group and the group must be reasonably accessible to the student. Next, the student must identify a research question – what, exactly, do you want to learn about this group? The research question must be fairly narrow in scope, as this is a short assignment; do not attempt to learn everything there is to know about your chosen community, rather focus on one particular aspect of it. I will be happy to provide assistance in narrowing down your research question! Then, the student will conduct a structured interview with a member of the selected group to get the information needed to answer the research question. Finally, write a 3-4 paper describing your community, research question, and results.

Paper Guidelines: The paper must be 3-4 pages in length, double-spaced using 11-point font; if you have photographs, examples of surveys or questionnaires, excerpts from interviews, or similar items they should go into an appendix which does NOT count toward your page total. A cover page may be used, depending on which writing style you use, but for the purposes of this assignment the cover page WILL NOT count toward your page total. If you opt to write in APA style, you can include an abstract, but the abstract will not count toward your page total. I do not care which style you use (APA, MLA, AAA, etc.), just pick one and adhere to the style requirements. If you cite information obtained from outside the interview you should use academic sources, such as those found in academically published books, manuscripts or peer-reviewed journals; web sites are not considered acceptable sources in most cases and must receive my prior approval to be considered valid sources of material for this project. Sources that are absolutely prohibited include dictionaries and encyclopedias (including on-line) and Wikipedia articles.
