Week 10 Discussion Reminder & Clarification and Application Modification

 Discussion Clarification

Do not forget that discussion posts are required for Week 10. In my mind, the instructions are not particularly clear. In one place it states “In this discussion, you will describe your sampling strategy for your chosen research proposal”, but in another it states “Post by Day 3 a 3- to 5-paragraph description in which you describe inputs to compute sample size for your chosen research problem”. One says one thing, one says another.

WHAT TO DO? WHAT TO DO?

HERE’S WHAT TO DO : Describe your sampling strategy, be specific. Include description of the population and the sampling frame (if a frame exists; if not, explain why it does not exist). Also, be sure to refer to your sampling strategy by name—that is, by one of the specific strategies in chapter 8 of Frankfort-Nachmias and Nachmias. Explain why your proposed sampling strategy is appropriate for your research, and explain why at least one other sampling strategy is not appropriate. Discuss “appropriateness” in terms of one or more of the following: the purpose of your research, your measured variables, your research questions, and your hypotheses.

HERE’S WHAT NOT TO DO : The course provides inadequate instruction on power analysis, and what it does provide is simplistic and not applicable to any of the statistical analyses studied in the course. Therefore, do not “describe inputs to compute sample size” or use G*Power or any other device to actually compute sample size for your proposed research.

 Application Assignment Modification

The first application assignment is exactly the same as described above for the discussion post, except that feedback that I provide to you in the discussion area (or to the whole class) must be incorporated in the application. For example, if you proposed a simple random sample and I pointed out that it is not possible because there is no identified population or that there is no sampling frame for the identified population, then corrections need to be made to the submitted application. As before, the application must be incorporated into the final paper to date and the entire document needs to be submitted.

The second application assignment is a reflection paper. Please be sure to submit each assignment to its proper dropbox.

There is no SPSS assignment for Week 10.

Sampling Strategy

In this week's Discussion and Application assignments, you will continue to work on your Final Project. In this Discussion, you will describe your sampling strategy for your chosen research proposal.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review Chapter 8 in the Frankfort-Nachmias and Nachmias book and the statistical power discussion on the Research Methods Knowledge Base website in this week's Learning Resources.

Consider the quantitative research plan you are developing for your Final Project and your research questions, hypotheses, variables, and analysis. What kind of power would be necessary for your research problem to be able to tell you what you would like to learn? What kind of sampling strategy would you recommend for your plan? What is your rationale for this choice?

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 3 a 3- to 5-paragraph description in which you describe inputs to compute sample size for your chosen research problem.

2. HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT DUE 11/7/15

Sampling

For this Application, you will build upon the sampling strategy you described in your Discussion Assignment. You will compute the sample size and run a power analysis on

your sampling strategy for your research proposal.

To prepare for this Application:

Review Chapter 8 in the Frankfort-Nachmias and Nachmias book.

Review the sampling strategy for your research proposal as you described in this week's Discussion Assignment.

Review the Sheperis media in this week's Learning Resources to learn how to run a power analysis using G*Power.

The assignment:

Compose a 1- to 3-page paper in which you do the following:

Describe the sampling strategy for your research proposal.

For each strategy that you did not choose, state why that one is not appropriate for your research questions, hypotheses, and variables.

Run a G*Power analysis to determine the appropriate sample size.

Support your work with references to the literature.
