Introduction
Create a introduction that provides a succinct overview of the scope and organization of the assignment. The suggested length is 1- 2 paragraphs
Context
Identifying and describing the participants and organization/school setting is an integral part of the action research study. It will be important to identify any and all demographics of the involved participants and organization/school setting. This should include the number of participants, participants approximate age and grade level, participants’ gender, participants’ race/ethnicity, and any learning characteristics that might impact the study (IEP, ELL, etc…) Details about the organization/school, staff, number and type of learners/employees, programs, ages, locale, and any other pertinent details regarding the specific content of the project. Specific locations, school names, student names should not be included.
The suggested length is 1- 2 paragraphs.
Participant Justification ( Population Choice) OPTIONAL SECTION
Clearly justify why you are working with these participants in this study. Why did you choose the participants you described in the paragraph above. Be as detailed as possible, without giving away any markers on who the participants were for the study. The suggested length is 1 page.
Literature Review
Summarize ( do NOT list) the literature related to the problem using 4-5 scholarly resources including a brief historical overview and that expands the introduction and presents the current research published about the problem. These must be peer reviewed sources, do NOT use Wikipedia or other web based sources. Remember this is a summary that compares and contrasts sources. Suggested length is two-to-three pages.
Area of Focus
The topic that you would like to study needs to be presented in specific detail not only as a general overview of the topic but as a discussion with vetted educational expert citations to support the study of the topic. The section should include an explanation as to why this topic is specifically important to you, your position, or your organization. Include how this topic choice is interesting and relevant to the education field. Begin by writing a statement that starts with, “The purpose of this study is to…” Suggested length is one-to-two sentences.
Research Questions
Action research requires at least two research questions, though you can have more.
The basic questions should be one quantitative and a qualitative. The questions should be observable and measurable.
Quantitative: What is the difference in (scores, behavior, achievement, etc) when (your intervention) is applied over (period of time)?
Qualitative: What is the perspective of (stakeholders, teachers, students, parents, etc) in regards to (your intervention)?
These questions should be narrow and focus on only one aspect. If you have another aspect you are looking for, create another question. Remember if you have a lot of questions, you will have to answer them and discuss them thoroughly later in this paper.
Teaching and Learning (optional section)
Discuss whether your idea is an issue that involves teaching and learning. Use relevant literature to support the discussion. ( 3-4 sentences)
Locus of Control (optional section)
Discuss how you can complete this AR proposal. A locus of control orientation is a belief about whether the outcomes of our actions are contingent on what we do (internal control orientation) or on events outside our personal control (external control orientation)." (Mamlin, Harris and Case, 2001, p. 275). You want your AR to be internal control orientated. ( 3-4 sentences)
Intervention/Innovation Description
Describe the intervention applied for your action research study including comments on the type of adjustments you may have had to make to the intervention. Suggested length is one page
Data Collection Strategies
Describe the data obtained through the observations using charts, diagrams, or other visual depictions of your data to supplement the description. Suggested length is one-two pages
Outcome Analysis
In one-to-two pages, explain the conclusions of the data analysis addressing the specific strategies that were successful, which strategies did not work as well as was anticipated, and how the strategies support the research questions. Suggested length is one-two pages
Learning Themes
In one-to-two pages, reflect on the research themes, including the unintended/unexpected outcomes, what worked well, what worked less well, and any process you would conduct differently. Suggested length is one-two pages
Action Plan
In two-to-three pages, explain the anticipated steps that are necessary to continue with this change initiative and the leadership strategies needed to implement them action plan. Suggested length is two-three pages
Conclusion
In two-to-three paragraphs, summarize the major outcome and analysis of the project including the gaps that were uncovered providing insight into the relationship between the topic of the literature review and your overall findings. Suggested length is two-three paragraphs.
Passion (optional section)
Describe whether your idea is something you feel passionate about and where this passion originates from for you (e.g., life experiences or professional practice) ( 3-4 sentences).
Inspiration (optional section)
Describe how your idea inspires you to implement change or improvement. (3-4 sentences).
