The Urban Dictionary, a crowdsourcing definition website, defines ‘hooking up’ or ‘hook up’ as a “purposely ambiguous, equivocal word to describe almost any sexual action. usually used to exaggerate or minimize what exactly happened. a hook-up can range from a make-out session to full out sex.” (Urban Dictionary, 2015)

On the other hand, the same source defines ‘romance’ along various lights. Among these is “A way of showing someone you care. Someone you love, like or choose to cherish. Romance can keep a relationship alive, or help it begin.” On the other hand, in the spirit of crowdsourcing, romance is also defined humorously by one contributor to the site as “dead … acquired in a hostile takeover by Hallmark and Disney, homogenized, and sold off piece by piece.” (Urban Dictionary, 2015)

For our purposes, we shall assume that ‘college romance’ is a combination of both definitions above, only that the setting for the said situation is the location and the time limit afforded by being in college.

Hooking up has killed romance, at least in its traditional sense. In the film 22 Jump Street, a sequel to a remake of a popular 80s film franchise, one of the characters is surprised when after an implied night of casual sex, the girl he spends the night with casually declares that what happened was only sex, and that there should be no meaning to what happened.

Perhaps this generation believes that romance is an overrated notion of relationships, and has accepted hooking up as its expression of its version of romance. Hooking up has redefined the human urge to find a mate, where procreation has already become out of the question in the pursuit of human interaction. We are after all a species so rare we could be the only among a few from the animal kingdom that desires sex merely for pleasure.

To summarize, I would say that perhaps, hooking up has killed romance, but that this is not exactly a bad thing. Hooking up emerged as a generational response to sex, but perhaps it did not exactly killed romance. Romance died along the way.
