My mother just can’t get it! I am almost 17 years old and all my friends are putting on jeans and tights and going to watch movies and eat ice cream. I have always been able to hide my disappointment any time she comes back home with one of those long, cotton padded, loose fitting dresses that are just way out of fashion. Today, however, the disappointment was written all over my face. I couldn’t hide it. I was hurt. This was because I had specifically made my request known to her. Her reaction, however, was unexpected. She was glazed. It was almost like she didn’t care. I swear for a moment I felt like I could actually tear the black cardigan she wore off her. It gave her an unreadable, almost expressionless look. What she said made it even graver. She had asked Maribel to make me more dresses for the winter. How could she be so mean! I almost choked on my own tears when I told her I didn’t like them. I didn’t even say thank you. I just said I didn’t like them. I swear I must have read the hurt in her eyes. She went numb. Her mouth opened but no words came out. I took the opportunity to tell her everything I had always kept hidden. I spoke fast. It was like my whole life depended on it. I told her how the dresses she made me wear were silly and completely out of touch with the current generation. I explained how some of those dresses might actually fit in church but would seem completely out of place at the movies. I have never seen my mother so dumbstruck. She didn’t reply-just kept quiet and listened. I hope tomorrow we will be able to resolve this.
