INDIVIDUAL STATEMENT OF ACHIEVEMENT A key performance parameter of an individual within group is its ability to gather and evaluate the required information. It is essential for engineers to manage and use the information professionally. This semester I was assigned the task of working on the temperature, photo resistor, liquid pump and the motion sensor. As mentioned in my IPN’s, throughout the semester, I encountered many challenges and I particularly found professional use and management of information beneficial to my progress. This semester I extensively researched different aspects of the project specifically focusing on serial communication involving the Arduino as evidenced by my IPN “week 2”. I downloaded all the data sheets for the component I was assigned to programme and I created a google drive folder for the team and regularly updated all team members about my progress and also posted all the collected information in to the drive so all members have access to the files. I also used endnote to reference all the materials I collected online including codes and other specific information about the Arduino and the components.
This semester majority of the work was done as a team therefore effective team contribution was required to complete the tasks. Together with the team we completed coding, testing, debugging, project report, project abstract, flyers and poster. I played an active role this semester, as mentioned above I was extensively involved coding the sensors and working on the liquid pump. I also played an active role in testing and debugging and I measured all currents and voltages around the components in order to improve the project and reduce failures as evidence by my IPN “week 8”. After the measurements I suggested different topology for different parts of the circuit and also suggested the use of resistors in some parts of the circuit. My part for the poster was to write the project abstract and help with referencing. Likewise for the team project report I suggested to the team to identify the sections for the report before commencing and I included all the relevant graphs from data sheet and wrote all the relevant sections to my assigned part in the report. I also played an important role notifying the team about the upcoming assessments and encouraged members to perform at their highest potential as evidenced by my IPN “week 5”.
Planning, self-review and performance evaluation is important as it provides a complete picture of an individual’s performance within a group. Throughout design 3B I have regularly evaluated my performance as I explicitly mentioned it in my IPN “week 9”. This semester I made a great use of my peer’s feedback. I submitted my code and my designated part for the written assessments for feedback and I used their feedback to improve the quality of my work. In semester 1, we created a timeline for the project I and the team regularly used the timeline to help us complete the project and submit the assessment work on time. Before the team meetings I planned ahead and organized mind maps on topics that I would talk about and listed all my suggestions for the project. Similarly I also organized plans for the weeks ahead as evidenced by my IPN’s.
In order to reduce project cost, save time and deliver a project on time it is beneficial to apply systematic engineering synthesis and design process. As part of my Design 3B tutorial presentation, I was designated to present on Engineering design process and I read a book called “Engineering Design Process” by Yousef Haik as evidenced by my IPN “week 4”. The book introduced me to many systematic engineering design processes. The process we used in designing our product as follow.
I. Identifying needs and gathering information
II. Customer requirements
III. Establishing a functional structure
IV. Specification
V. Developing a concept
VI. Concept evaluation
VII. Embodiment of design
VIII. Detailed design
IX. Marketing
Initially I and the team had no specific systematic approach designing the product. After I and one of the other team members researched on Engineering design process we adopted the above systematic design approach.
This semester myself and the team encountered many challenges. For me, it was challenging to get the liquid pump working since the output from the Arduino pins were only 1.2 V and 400mA. Through online research and a suggestion by a team member I used a BJT in order to deliver the right amount of current and voltage for the pump. The second challenge was testing the UV sensor, even though no problems were encountered with the code it was challenging testing the product due to lack of proper equipment. The problem was resolved by ordering a UV torch and then the sensor was successfully tested. The third major problem faced was the dot –matrix display, the team found it difficult coding the dot-matrix and over time the problem was resolved. In summary in design 3B myself and the team’s skills were enhanced in:
· Applying the engineering techniques, tools and resources
· Applying a systematic engineering design process
· Planning, self-review and performance evaluation
· Effective team leadership /membership
· And professional use and management of information.
