Sexual Harassment
Sexual harassment is a real problem in the workplace which is considered a discrimination. It is about a decision that ca be made based on sexual conduct and that is called Quid Pro Quo Harassment. The other type called Hostile Work Environment Harassment where employees work in an aggressive and bad environment based on someone’s behavior. However, the other major problem is when firms stop taking actions toward this issue just because they think that sexual harassment is not a risk factor on the firm.
Human resource management’s responsibility is to set the rules and policies for the firm including sexual harassment. HR management is the department that involved in providing different methods to acknowledge people about the consequences of occurring this issue in the company. Providing a safe environment that is free of sexual harassment for worker will definitely improve the firm’s performance and will encourage people to work in because it prevents worker’s rights.
1) Do nothing. The firm has enough issues to deal with right now. Look at the issue again next year if supervisors continue to mention incidents. (Cost: none)
Pros of this statement:
The first positive aspect about this statement is that the firm is focusing on other issues that are occurring instead of just pushing them to the next year. The other positive side is that there is no cost where the company does not have to pay anything in the current time.
Cons of this statement:
Sexual harassment is an imperative issue to take care of and it does not have less propriety than any other problem that the firm is facing. Sexual harassment eventually has physical and psychological effects on the victim and that negatively effects the firm. Those victims would not perform as they used to because when they are working in a firm that does not protect their rights, they lose the motivation to accomplish in that firm. As a result, the firm’s production will be reduced as this problem keeps going on with no action taken.
2) Distribute a copy of the current sexual harassment policy to all employees at a special meeting. (Cost: $1,000)
Pros of this statement:
Going over the sexual harassment policy with printed brochure to keep in employees handbooks. The conversation in special meeting as well as the brochures must introduce a full explanation of what is sexual harassment, what are the consequences, and what are the side effects on the firm. So, reminding employees and acknowledging them about this issue is the positive aspect about.
