Mary is planning a study to see if learning of 6th graders on a math lesson is affected by background noise level. She wants to use a t-test for independent groups to analyze her results. Help her plan her study. What is her independent variable (IV) here? Describe two conditions she could create for the IV in her study. What is her dependent variable (DV) here? Describe a way to measure the DV so that each participant would have one score at the end. Would this DV measure be on a continuous scale of measurement? Why is this important? Explain and justify.

The independent variable in this study is the noise level.

Condition#1- Music being played at a low level while the lesson is being taught.
Condition #2- No music being played in the background.
What is her dependent variable (DV) here?
Amount of math learned.
Describe a way to measure the DV so that each participant would have one score at the end. Would this DV measure be on a continuous scale of measurement? Why is this important? Explain and justify.
A way to measure the the DV to get one score would be to provide a test that summarizes the information covered in the lesson. Similar to a test or quiz given in the classroom. If the goal is to get one score from each participant this measurement provides the tools to measure the participants work. The DV measure would be on a continuous scale. Freedom to choose the degree of precision or the number of categories for measuring a variable makes the variable continuous (Gravetter & Wallnau, 2010). This is important because the scores of the group could be measured to create the one score for each participant. This measurement would allow the researcher to determine what areas were learned at different levels of efficiency along with the problem areas.
