COURSE OVERVIEW: This course provides an introduction to the Microsoft Office 2013 applications suite which includes Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. This course will also work with relational database concepts.

All worksheets and discussions are considered ongoing work and will be graded after the week is completed. All projects are due the night before the start of class on the first day of class for the week unless otherwise stated. All work must be submitted via Canvas. The final comprehensive projects in Word, Excel and PowerPoint are due three weeks after material is discussed in class. The presentations in Week 15 are your final projects. Late work cannot be accepted. Students are encouraged to help each other on their projects. However, all students are expected to turn in their own work.

The Division of Student Success provides assistance and support for all students.  Services include peer tutoring, individual consultation to assist students with achieving their academic goals, study skills materials, Writing Studio, and accommodations for students with documented disabilities.  Academic Success services are located on the main floor of the University Library.  Writing and math tutors are also available for BYOH (Bring Your Own Homework) Sunday through Wednesdays from 6:30PM-8:00PM and Saturdays from 11:00AM-2:00PM.  Call 314-529-9228 or email [email protected] for more information. ISYS 100 Computer Applications Comprehensive Project

(Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

Find a question or problem you want to study. The question or problem must include some type of numeric data. Research and find two sources. You must be able to gather solid numeric data and include an analysis of the question or problem or brief conclusion.

Mini-Research Paper (Due at Beginning of Week 8) (100 points)

· APA Style

· 4 pages long: 1 Title page, 2 pages for the Body, 1 References page

· Submit a copy of paper to Canvas. It must contain:

· Running head: TITLE IN CAPS and page number on first page of your paper in the header

· TITLE IN CAPS and page number on all pages but the first page of your paper in the header

· Your name

· The same title on the title page and the first page of the body of the paper

· The last page has a title of References

· Is double-spaced

· Has proper APA-style in-text cites

· Has proper APA-style references

· All work referenced must have an in-text cite, and all in-text cites must have a reference

· Contains some type of conclusion

Spreadsheet and Chart (Due at Beginning of Week 11) (100 points)

The comprehensive projects build on each other. Using Word, you created a small APA-style research paper. Look through your paper and choose information from your paper or information related to your paper to create at least one Excel spreadsheet and one chart. Any worksheets and charts must be contained within one workbook.

· The spreadsheet must contain the following functions:

· A function that displays the current day whenever opened

· A total using the appropriate function

· An average using the appropriate function

· A maximum value using the appropriate function

· A minimum value using the appropriate function

· Use appropriate formatting. You do not have to use both decimals and currency. If you do, then pay close attention to:

· Decimals

· How many decimals of precision are included?

· Currency

· Use correct accounting form (discussed on page 319)

· Any tables must be easy to read using shading and borders

Chart

· Use an appropriate chart for your topic (You don’t have to chart everything)

· Is your chart meaningful?

PowerPoint Presentation (Due at Beginning of Week 8) (100 points)

The PowerPoint presentation is the last piece to your comprehensive project. You are presenting your findings to the class. Use the APA paper and Excel spreadsheet and chart and create a PowerPoint presentation to present your findings. Your PowerPoint presentation must be related to your topic, paper and spreadsheet. You can supplement it with additional information, if there is a need.

· The presentation must contain the following:

· 5 minutes in length (approximately)

· At least 8 slides

· At least 4 images

· PowerPoint transition or animation on at least one slide

· Suitable theme for your topic

· It must be set up so that you can click on an image and get to a web page

· Include at least one chart in your PowerPoint (can be the same as created in Excel)

· Include a SmartArt Graphic
