Week 1 Discussion -

Discussion: The Importance of Algebraic Thinking

Algebraic thinking enables you to achieve various things. With the help of algebraic thinking, you can develop the tools to generalize, solve problems, analyze mathematical relationships, and represent situations. You can use algebraic thinking to model situations in any field and to make predictions. The symbols that are used in such situations are keys for developing algebraic thinking.

One of the benefits of online learning is that students can share ideas with one another in a collaborative environment. This Discussion area opens the forum to you and your peers, giving you the opportunity to weigh in on a topic.

In this Discussion, you will describe the past, present, and future of algebra in your life. You will describe how you have used algebraic concepts throughout your life and how your knowledge of algebra has helped you, both in your discipline and everyday activities.

To prepare for this Discussion:

· Review this week’s readings from the course text College Algebra Essentials.

· Think about how you have used algebraic concepts throughout your life. In what areas do you apply algebraic concepts? In what way might knowledge of algebraic concepts help you in your life?

· Investigate how algebra will apply in your discipline of choice.

· Places to look:

· Review your program of study for coursework that may require knowledge of algebra or other algebraic concepts. Review the course descriptions.

· Check the Walden Library. Look for articles or research studies from your chosen discipline.

· Conduct an Internet search. What keywords might you use to find materials related to your discipline and mathematics?

· Consider the types of mathematics listed in the course text table of contents. How do some or many of these topics relate to areas of your life or discipline?
