Mission of Organization

The mission of the Los Angeles County Public Health Department is to ensure that the health and safety of all its residents are protected from health hazards caused by natural disasters and epidemics. Organization Goals
The goal of the county health department is to break the cycle through:
Protecting the health of the public
Prevention of disease and outbreaks
Prevention of disease reoccurrence, AND
Promoting healthy living
For many years, the health of the public has been in question. Disease outbreaks, poor food quality, contaminated water, and polluted air has been the driver behind many illnesses and deaths. Los Angeles County rank in the top five percentile of health treats caused by poor air quality in the United States. The goal of the Los Angeles County Public Health Department is to continue searching for cures to reduce and eradicate diseases, monitor the quality of air we breathe, as well as monitor the food consumers purchase on a daily basis. This is in collaboration with health officials and the federal and state regulatory guidelines on disease prevention and intervention.

Environmental Health
The Environmental Health Department of the Los Angeles County Public Health Department is one of several large entities within the county of Los Angeles
My Chosen topic for this project is Climate Control in Los Angeles County. The Environmental Health Division mission “strives to promote health and quality of life by identifying, preventing, and controlling harmful environmental factors in Los Angeles County”(Los Angeles County Public Health Department, 2010). The Environmental Health Department has focused their attention on the promotion of health through surveillance ensuring that the environment is free from harmful effects that pose as health risks to families living in LA County. According to the Environmental Health Division, their goal is to “assess environmental conditions” that creates health hazards.
6
Population of staff
The Environmental Health department is located in Baldwin Park, CA. This division hires highly qualified employees thoroughly trained in their area of expertise.

Environmental Health Programs
Comprised of several divisions, each program is responsible for maintaining the health and safety of the county. Underneath the umbrella lies:
The Surveillance & Enforcement District Bureau
Environmental Planning & Support Bureau
Specialized Surveillance & Enforcement Bureau
Toxicology & Environment Assessment Bureau
Consisting of nurses, physicians, epidemiologist and other trained professionals, these hard working county employees are responsible for identifying and controlling toxic agents throughout the county. They are also responsible for grading the cleanliness of restaurants, hospitals, and schools. The agency also meets the needs of the public by protecting the environment, controlling the amount of pollutants that is released in the air, the management of solid waste, and emergency preparedness. It doesn’t matter what emergency you are faced with, the environmental health department will fight to secure better living conditions for all Los Angeles County Residents and surrounding regions.
9
Patient demographics and geographic
Los Angeles County residents are affected by poor climate.
All nationalities
All communities especially poorer communities
Extreme heat, ground-level ozone, and particulate pollution will all increase in a warming world, making outdoor workers, people with respiratory problems, and those who lack air conditioning more vulnerable to illness (Union of Concerned Scientist, 2012). Air pollution affects everyone especially those that suffer from serious illnesses, small children, and the elderly.
10
Environmental Health Department statistics
California is home to over 32 million residents
4,000 member staff at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health
The department, which has a budget of $900 million, approved by the Los Angeles Board Of Supervisors oversees the public wellness of 10 million Los Angeles County residents on issues including the environment, disease control, and community and family health (Abrams, 2014).
Fielding contends that the success within the department of public health was made possible through the efforts of the each team player. He states “Due to your commitment to mission, drive, and hard work to improve health in our county, your Department is viewed as one of the best local health departments in the nation.”(Abrams, 2014)
