The assessment that was given was set up to determine the students’ understanding of ratios and their ability to read ratio language and see if they can come up with the correct answer. Ratios can be a challenge to students as presented by the student who did this assessment. Ratios are utilized more often than students realize. One issue the Student had was they ignored or missed part of the question or some of the data, on a three part solution. Also the student set up a ratio correct but put the numbers in the wrong places.
From the results of this assessment, the teacher should model a few more problems with ratios in order for the student to understand. Also, the student should be given more hands- on learning with ratios, where they are engaged and fully attentive. Some great ways the teacher could give hands on learning would be; allowing the students to use resources such as a blocks or a cubed ruler they can color.
Some other strategies that could be used would be to use real world examples such as fruit and students. A fantastic hands on strategies would be to have the students go to the back of the classroom and read off some ratios and have the students make the ratio with themselves above and below a line taped on the floor. These strategies will give the students the opportunity to see and participate with the ratio which may gain their attention and understanding of ratios.
