NOTE: For about two weeks you have free access to MyStatLab in case you don’t have an access code or if you aren’t ready to buy immediately. OVERALL COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVE: An introduction to statistical reasoning and application of primary statistical techniques used in solving managerial problems. Covers both descriptive and inferential statistics. Students may not receive credit for more than one of the following courses: PSYC 210 or ADMN 210. Today’s world contains an amazing amount of digital information that allows efficient managers and administrators to spot business trends, provide insights into science, shed light on customer preferences, etc. As an administration (and a literate reader of journals and newspapers), you will need various tools to assist you in making rational decisions with respect to your day-to-day operations and future plans. One of the most important of these tools is the quantitative approach to management problems. These tools provide valuable insight into ensuring quality and productivity in the work place. This course covers basic statistical concepts and techniques concerning frequency distributions, measures of central tendency and variation, probability, discrete and continuous distributions, sampling, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, correlation and regression, and chi-square.

Students will be exposed to these topics and how each applies to and can be used in the business environment. Problems will be solved using both manual computations and statistical functions on Excel. This course is designed to present a sufficient amount of theory for understanding and development; however stress is placed on application of techniques and presentation of relevant examples. The course has been designed with the non-mathematician in mind (although some knowledge of basic algebra is assumed). SOFTWARE AND CALCULATOR: We will be using MS Excel, which is available in our labs and also to anybody who has a computer and wishes to take the course online. You could use any of the MS Excel 2007, 2010 or 2013 to do the computer assignments. Also, it is strongly recommend that you purchase a calculator if you don’t already have one. COMPUTER ASSIGNMENST: Computer assignments are designed to show you how to do statistical calculations using Excel and to help clarify material from the lecture. You are required to see a YouTube video as a brief demonstration to explain the material, and then you are required to uses MS Excel to do a short assignment. The MS Excel solution worksheet would then have to be emailed to the address provided prior to the due date for grading. The relevant files for the computer assignments are available on Blackboard and MyStatLab sites. Please pay close attention to their due dates in each file and also in the class schedule in this syllabus. CLASS ASSIGNMENTS: There will be reading and assignments in this course, all of which are available on the MyStatLab website. Be aware that statistics is a subject which cannot be learned merely by listening to lectures -- you must work examples (the more the better!) to understand the material. You should read the assigned chapters before the class period. Then try the homework immediately after the lecture if possible. It is suggested that if you have trouble with a particular example, work more examples to cement the concepts. Homework sets will be graded automatically by MyStatLab...be sure to pay attention to due dates! MYSTATLAB ACCESS: To register for ADMN 210 – 70: 1. Go to MyStatLab.com. 2. EXAMS: Exams include two midterms and a non-cumulative final. The format will be a combination of true/false, multiple choice questions and problems similar to the homework. NO MAKEUP EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN. Exams will be available in the “content” section of the Blackboard in a time window from 10:00am to 10:00pm on the day of the exam. You are required to be online on the CSUSB Blackboard site and start and finish the test sometime between 10:00am and 10:00pm. Each test takes a maximum of one hour and thirty minutes to finish. The tests are submitted automatically 90 minutes after you start the test. I suggest you start the tests no later than 8:30pm - they will end automatically at 10:00pm! I also suggest that you have your calculator and cheat sheet next to you! PLEASE make sure that you mark down the time and the dates and make sure that you are available and gain access to the tests at the right time. Also, PLESAE make sure that you do not navigate on the Internet during the exam – this could terminate your exam! Additionally, you have to have a reliable ISP – otherwise, you might experience problems during the exam and miss the opportunity to finish it. Homework Assignments: Homework assignment will become available at the right time on the MyStatLab site. You are supposed to do them prior to 11:59 pm of their due dates, and they are graded by the site computers. You have 5 opportunities to get the right answer. The purpose is to enhance the learning process and get you ready for the exams. Computer assignments: These will be available for you at the right time in the “content” section of the Blackboard. You are supposed to watch some YouTube videos related to applications of MS Excel software, and then use the software to solve the problems in the assignments. The MS Excel solution files then must be submitted on the Blackboard by 11:59 pm of the due dates. Well, these days we all use computers to do our work and solving our statistical business problems cannot be an exception.

GRADING: Your course grade will be determined as follows:

100% • NOTE: even though the homework is only 10% of the grade points, you will find that it is

really more valuable than that if you do the homework you will do well on the exams, and if you don't, you won't! Also, please note that late homework assignments cannot be accepted.

** All computer assignments must be submitted through the Blackboard prior to their due dates. Computer assignment #1 is just for your information and should not be turned in. Also, please note that late computer assignments will not be accepted.

The grading scale will be: A: >90%; B: >80%; C: >70%; D: >60%; F: < 60%. Pluses and minuses will be given by discretion of the instructor. Homework assignment scores will be available on the MyStatLab site. Exam and computer assignment scores will be posted, throughout the term, on the Blackboard. If you find any problem with your score, you must inform the instructor within one week from the time this score is posted. After one week, scores will not be reviewed. You need a C in this class to pass.
