The High Is Always the Pain and the Pain Is Always the High by Jay Kang
The author starts by telling the reader about place and time, that is Manhattan and in the morning, winter season and the events that happed that same time. Off course he narrates his personal experience with his friends he just met and reportedly they had seen him pocket a $ 100 bill comfortably. Here he is telling us of his encounter with childhood friends from Westchester County whom he was not sure he knew their behavior since they parted, but he had heard that kids from the same county could act otherwise. He writes, “I knew nothing about Westchester County except for the stigma that kids from Westchester act tougher than they are”.
The scene has lots of suspense. As a reader I am eager to know what happened next. He says he was not nervous, but he is suspicious. My worry as a reader is whether his friends are confirmed his worries by stealing the bill from him or did he experience next. It is a tense scene. By the end of the introduction, the boys did not steal from him, instead they treated him as a friend, escorted him to his home. That was a breath taking moment for the reader.
The author uses art to introduce significant information to the reader for instance the stigma of the Winchester county kids. He uses storytelling skills to take the reader on a mental tour. The story of his encounter with the friends is a creative idea that creates conflicting images in the mind of the reader only to keep the reader interested to read further. The idea behind the mindset is that stigma could lead to wrong conclusion about others.
The introduction tells us that the authors character as a person who loves making friends anyhow. He is shown as a risk taker because he could make friendship with unexpected and suspicious characters and still remain calm.
In addition, the author uses imagery. The events underlying his story of the encounter with suspicious boyfriends, the pocketing of the 4 100 bill, the arguments in the car about Eminem and Biggie all help has create image of the scene. He also uses suspense to keep the reader anxious and interested to find out what next.
What’s more, he varies his sentence structure; short verses long sentence to make the story rhythmic and interesting to read. Otherwise, if he maintained same sentence structure it could be boring. The writer foregrounds his quest to make friends unexpectedly. The evident journalistic element of craft is personal consciousness. He remains courageous and open to criticism in telling his personal story.
Thesis
The author decided to craft the scene with suspense because he wanted to keep his readers reading to discover more about the subject matter.
